For me it's not a science...I found that searching and searching sometimes reaps some savings. I'll check expedia, orbitz, hotel sights, AAA, airline sights. I'll compare package prices to a la carte trips. Sign up for loyalty programs to get better rates, upgrades, etc.

Re: How do you find good deals on vacations?
For our upcoming Vegas trip, I signed up for specials on the websites of the hotels where we were interested in staying. A week later I got a special emailed me from the Venetian.

I'd say being engaged online helps. It helps you get specials from various places, or be advised of sales. For example, with Disney World, if you go on their website, order maps, order a DVD, etc, you are more likely to get PIN code discounts emailed or mailed to you.
Also, subscribe to email lists, facebook pages, etc. On my fb page right now I cater to a lot of couples and a lot of people in NY, so I post specials relevant to that demo.

Re: How do you find good deals on vacations?
There are tons of ways to get deals.
Sign up for miles, rewards, emails, etc. for any travel vendor you use, even just once. You might get a great deal emailed to you. This is especially true for hotel chains.
I use kayak.com for airfares because it's the search engine of search engines; it looks everywhere and will pull from sites like expedia or travelocity and even the airlines themselves.
I like Travelzoo's top 20 as well. It gets emailed to you every Wednesday.

Re: How do you find good deals on vacations?
thanks i never travel and i am trying to plan a vacation for later on in the year and i have no idea where to start or how to go about doing it to make sure i get my moneys worth.I think i might just have to go to a travel agent esp. since i have a feeling the week i was planning on going away seems very high in airfare so i am assuming it must be a popular time to travel!

Where are you looking to go?
A Travel Agent can definitely help you, by making suggestions and handling the details.
Are you looking for and adventurous vacation or a quiet/relaxing one?
Check out Living Social Escapes. They have some great deals there.
Have you thought about a cruise out of NY?>
What are your parameters including dates, budget, distance, etc?

Travel agents don't really save you money. The point of using them is so you don't have to spend the time to research.
In fact, I recently requested a quote from a very popular Disney travel agency for a Disney cruise. Their price included a $25 onboard credit, in addition to the $25 one Disney gives you. Guess what....their price was $25 higher than Disney was. So for me, it was pointless to book through someone else and pay more, when I can just do it myself. Besides, I like to be in control of my own planning.

Re: How do you find good deals on vacations?
I am not 100% sure where thats one problem; i posted last week on getting suggestions for vacation sposts; some people suggested Aruba. well i went to look up information and i have no idea where to start there are many options to choose from and i dont know what is good what is not.
Then i decided to look at air fair; granted i only looked at Jet Blue b/c DH only wants to fly with them, and airfare for both of us was going to cost over $1600 alone ... now that could be the norm i have no idea or it could be the week i chose.
I want to go away for my 30th Bday and ideally i want to be actually away the day of my bday which is August 30th and it seems traveling is expensive around that time but i really have no idea. I was then thinking maybe do vegas for a couple days on my bday and go away earlier in the year but the vegas trip may be expenisve too because i think the week of the 30th is a high travel spot.
Im not set on any spot for vacation the only thing i dont want to do is going anywhere where i will probably take my DD eventually (she is only 13 months now), i.e dinsey, universal.
thanks for all the tips i have been given so far

It might be bad because of Labor Day weekend. I think it's early this year.
Vegas will be VERY hot then.
I've only been to Aruba on a cruise so I have no idea what the airfare is.
Like I said, try kayak.com and see what the airfare is on many different sites.
Jetblue is a great airline but I wouldn't limit yourselves to it.

Are you sure it was for the same exact room, same exact options? A TAs price should never be higher than Disney's, but some of the rooms have the exact same names but different categories, or the TA might have included travel insurance. I'd go back to her and verify that it's the same room/same category. You might as well get the extra $25 credit PLUS all of the services of a TA, especially booking the fancy restaurants. If you want, I can see what the latest rates are.

Yup, same exact thing with the same exact room type, etc. We are not doing the cruise now....it was the weekend one out of NY. I ended up booking directly with Disney but just cancelled because it's just so expensive for what is really one full day of fun.

That's so strange. That's not how it should be. So far I've been able to save my clients money.
I'm really tempted by the NY sailings. I'm thinking of doing a 5 day one. The cruise to nowhere sounds good, but I'd rather take a lengthier trip

Re: How do you find good deals on vacations?
I was looking on expedia for another trip. Decided to check out how much Vegas was. It was $360, by time I asked my boss if I could go, it went down to $328. Right after I booked it went up to $418 - $90 more then I paid.
You just have to keep checking - or like other said, use kayak.
I also heared you get better deals on Tuesday and sometimes Wednesday.
Also, be a little flexible on your days. I wanted to go Thur-Sun but Wed-Sat was $150 cheaper.
