Walls or floors

DH and I are closing on our home purchase next week. We are trying to line things up for the work we want to do before we move in. We disagree about whether we should have the floors sanded first or paint the walls first. He says we should paint first to avoid having paint spill on the floors, which I understand. But I think we should have the floors sanded first to avoid having the freshly painted walls coated in dust. Any advice?

Re: Walls or floors

when we bought our house we did it in this order (all before moving in)

1 - wall repair/sanding/spackle/primer
2 - floors sanded and finished
3 - final coat of paint and trim

this was how our contractor and floor guy suggest we do it. Anything that gets on the floor during repair and priming will get sanded right off. But... you don't want to sand after your walls are all done cause they will just be mess

Re: Walls or floors

Paint (in reasonable amounts, anyway), comes off of a finished floor pretty easy if you get it right away with a damp cloth.

Re: Walls or floors

1,000% floors first!!! wet paint comes up real easy off of a wood floor if you have a spill... but redoing floors covers EVERYTHING. your fresh paint job will be a waste.

Re: Walls or floors

I'm with your DH, I'd do the walls first (but I've never had to re-finish floors, so I'm not sure how messy it is).

we got our floors re-done but painted the walls first. afterwards if there was any dust, I just swiffered everything.

do the walls first.

the floor will create dust that will be on the walls. you will have to wipe down the walls in order to paint them after the floors.

Then touch up any dings after the floors are done.

We did all painting first, and didnt care if it soilled or got messy. We also legt all baseboards off until after the floors were done.

I agree... when we got our floors done it splashed on our walls (not that much, but enough that I would have had to do a lot of touch-ups & repaint certain walls). Luckily we did the floors first.

Re: Walls or floors

If you do the floors first COVER THEM!

They sell the brown paper. Just roll it out over the floors and tape it down with blue painters tape (Anything else will leave glue)
