doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
i did at at home uti test that came back positive tonight after having a day of insane pressure and non stop peeing.
i called my doc and he is calling in an antibiotic for me.
soooo relieved but now i wonder if the test strip could be inaccurate and i am taking an antibiotic that i shouldnt? dh looked at it and agreed it was postive..but now i am worried that i should have it tested at docs office...but i am losing my chit in pain.
would you take the antibiotic???

I would think you're Dr would know what's best. He wouldn't call in an antibiotic that wasn't safe for you and the baby, and if he feels that you taking the home test is enough to call in a prescription - he must think they are pretty accurate! UTIs are so common during pregnancy - I don't think the antibiotic could hurt!

Of course if you feel more comfortable - tell him you'd like to come in and take a test to be sure

Re: doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
Im actually surprised the Dr. trusted an at home test. Im not saying hes wrong, I just find it kind of strange. Usually they would want you to come in and provide a sterile sample and they would then tested there. I could be wrong though. In any case, if you feel uneasy why not go in and have them double check? I know when I first got pregnant I had a UTI and was put on ABX but my test was done in the hospital.

Re: doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
I have used the at home test a few times and they have never given me a false positive. I have gotten a false negative but if is says positive I always had an infection. I ended up with a nasty one when I was about 5 weeks pregnant. Thank goodness he called me in a script since it was during the holidays and they were not open. I have always been put on Macrobid for an uti when pregnant. i hope you feel better I know how much they suck

Re: doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
My primary dr thought I had one. Tested me in the office without a clean catch. I thought it was weird so I bought the strips myself. 2 clean catches came back positive for leukocytes when I did it. I took the medicine and it turned out the urinalysis came back negative. I'd get one done if you can to be sure. Was it the leukocytes or nitrites that were positive?

Re: doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
I caught myself taking a UTI test even though I got tested at least 2x a week. (I'm neurotic!)
Anyways, I told my doc I suspected UTI and she "gently" convinced me I'm just imagining things . Like I said, I was getting my urine tested at least 2x a week and they found nothing.
ETA: Sorry I read further. Didnt realize u were feeling symptoms. My point was that Doc should have found it before you did.

After 2 full days on it you should be feeling better. My last one was really bad since the emergency line refused to call my ob for a uit even though I was pregnant. So the infection got bad. It took a full 6 days to feel completely better. Normally I get relief after 2 days and feel good by 4 days on meds.
As for the test you held it for 10 minutes and got trace amounts. The directions say to hold it for 4 hours so you can imagine what the test would have said. I promise you will feel better. The cramping and constant urge to pee will go away. You will still have to pee all the time but at least it won't be that urge to go right after you pull up your pants.. I was told to take Cranactin to prevent future ones and to try to lift up my belly when I pee to help empty it better. yes I know how crazy that sounds

Re: doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
I would ask to see the dr.....it depends on what type of bacteria you have....the antibiotic he may prescribe (which I am sure won't harm the baby) may not cure your UTI. I had a UTI for 22 weeks, yes, count em - 22 weeks when I was pregnant with my first DD. Took all sorts of antibiotics and she is just fine.....but I would still want the dr to send my urine out for a culture to make sure the right thing is being treated.

Re: doc calling in antibiotic....thoughts?
I took antibiotics when i had a terrible sore throat at the beginning of my pregnancy, certain ones are fine for pregnancy, and like others said i dont think your doc would prescribe something harmful.
