IUI questions

Has anyone had luck with this? We have been trying just about a year and have an appt with by dr in 2 weeks. She told me she would recommend some infertility specialists and they may suggest IUI.
I have read online a little about it, but have some questions.
How greater are the chances of getting pregnant with this method?
Are there side effects?
Do most insurances cover this procedure?
Is there a greater chance of having multiples?

Re: IUI questions

No side effects. Simple procedure, feels like getting a pap smear. My insurance covered it 100% until we ran out of coverage. No increased risk of multiples......they are just taking the travel time of the sperm away and putting it exactly where it needs to go to fertilize the egg.

<-------------------My very first IUI. One egg, one IUI, no meds.

In 2010 we started TTC #2 and I had about 6 IUI's. 3 of them took and I got pregnant but unfortunately they ended in miscarriage.

Just had another IUI this morning, we'll see if it worked in 2 weeks!! Chat Icon

Re: IUI questions

it all depends on your reason for IF.
if you do medicated IUIs, which most people do, then yes the chances of multiples are higher, but its more from ovulating multiple eggs from the meds then it is from the IUI directly. you can do medicated cycles and still Chat Icon , you don't have to do IUIs. the chance for multiples would still be increased with a medicated BD cycle. you would def have some side effects from the meds, not from the IUI itself.

the chance of conceiving def increases from IUI but the % depends on your issues. for me it was 8%, and we never chose IUI. we got pregnant twice from medicated BD cycles, but they both ended in chemical pregnancies. we eventually moved to IVF and conceived our 8m old Chat Icon on our first IVF.

good luck!!

Re: IUI questions

No side effects. Our insurance covers it 100%. Meds are not covered (I do a medicated cycle and need a trigger shot to O). I've had 4 unsuccessful IUIs. Going on number 5.

Re: IUI questions

I had 6 total IUI cycles and got pregnant from 2 of them (one was my Chat Icon who I lost in the 17th week due to complications...... and the other was a chemical).

The chance for multiples depends on how many follicles you had. With my first pregnancy I had 3-4 follies and one baby. With my chemical, obviously I have no idea- although I had 5-6 follies that cycle.

I'm not sure about other insurance plans but my insurance covers unlimited IUIs. There are no side effects from the actual procedures, just the drugs... It's different for everyone but I mostly had bloating. It's been a while since I've done IUIs though..

IUIs do work for many people. It's relatively noninvasive, they just put the sperm directly where it needs to be. Ultimately I moved onto IVF but because of multiple losses, I am now getting a surrogate.

Re: IUI questions

I have pcos and also produce a sperm antibibody so for us iui was a good option. A RE will run tests on you and DH to determine if you are a good candiate. I had to take clomid and progesterone to stimulate follie growth and keep the pregnancy but everyone is different. Some insruances cover IF treatments so do not so you really need to call your insurance company and find out. As for side effects the only side effects I had were from the meds and they were minor things like hot flashes and headaches.

My dd was the result of my third iui attempt in 2009. I am currernly 21 weeks pregnant with my second who was a product of our first iui.
