Re: cord blood banking?
I think it's about 50-50. I know a lot of people who did it and a lot who didn't. We chose to do it because heaven forbid we needed it in the future and didn't do it, we would never forgive ourselves. The liklihood of needing it is very slim and I hope we never need it, but the expense over the years for the banking can't compare to my child's life. JMO.

Re: cord blood banking?
We donated it. We were told if god forbid we needed it the first year of DC's life we could use it, after that no more. There was just no way we could afford to bank it , we still can't , we'll do the same with this one if all goes well.

We're paying $1,750 with Viacord (they had a $500 off promotion when I signed up). It's then $125 per year for storage fees.

Re: cord blood banking?
I feel like a lot of what I read says that its not usable to treat that child, but could be possible for use by a sibling. So with this being our first, do we bank it for possible use by a child we may or may not have in a few years? I'm curious if those of you who chose to do it read otherwise? I'm very torn b/c I want to do everything and anything possible to help my child should they ever get sick down the road, but the more I look into it, seems sort of like a scam to privately store it. Right now, I'm sort of leaning towards donating it for use in a public bank. But I'm definitely curious to know others opinions/thoughts etc. I know you cant believe everything you read on the internet so its so hard to know the right choice!

Re: cord blood banking?
I read something on this earlier today. There is also a question of how good it will be in future years. There arent enough studies done. With that being said, i woldnt want to risk needing it for this child or future children- we will probably do it.

Re: cord blood banking?
It really is a personal decision.. We would love to but really don't have the money at all. I would love to donate it to a public bank but my dr said they don't do it in Nassau or Suffolk counties.. Has anyone heard anything different that I could look in to?

I'm giving birth at North Shore and we will be donating it. we cant afford it and they usually dont use the childs own cord blood for themselves anyway, it is better to donate and then use someone elses (g-d willing it is available tho). North Shore does take the donation. They work with the national cord blood program. Nationalcordbloodprogram.org
All the other hospitals in NY that take donations for them are listed there. You can see if your hospital is on the list.

Re: cord blood banking?
No. not everyone does. It's expensive. You could also donate the blood at certain hospitals. I know LIJ does it.
