DDP vs. TiW - my last trip
I just did the math, and we actually spent at least $100 LESS with TiW instead of DDP. This is excluding the $75 we paid. Actual TiW savings added up to $73, so our next trip is gravy. The only number that's exact is the TiW savings because I found all of our TS receipts, but I am missing some QS and snacks. I allowed $100 for anything I might have forgotten, so the savings is probably well over $100.
Even if we had broken even I would say we did just fine. We almost never had desserts or soft drinks, but we did order appetizers and alcohol a few times. We would not have used up our snack credits by any stretch, but we would have had to pay for one expensive meal , or 2 cheaper meals OOP since we were over our TS credits.
With TiW we were able to save some $ while eating whatever the heck we wanted, which is always a plus.
I know this is a perennial question, so I wanted to chime in.

Interesting - but the only way to get TiW is to have an AP pass right? So for the majority of people it isn't available right?

AP, DVC or FL resident.
It's the cheapest or AP holders.
There are a lot of people for whom an AP makes a lot of sense either because of the lenght of trips, or availability of discounts.
We also have a lot of DVC members on the boards.

Even without TiW, we still would have some ahead on this trip vs. DDP.
Unless you eat exactly like what the plan proscribes, it's usually not such a great deal, even when it's "free."
Some people like it for pre-paying and peace of mind, but I don't find it generally saves people money.
Most of the time when people claim they saved money on DDP they're counting it as if they had paid cash for evereything on DDP, but would you get a dessert and a soda at every meal? I don't, so I don't find DDP to be worth it, and in fact, it's limiting.

I agree with this part and it makes me nuts...the idea of giving Disney money to have the illusion of saving money. 
We spent $320 OOP for 4 lunches & 3 dinners (5TS/2CS) which includes a couple of appetizers/drinks which are excluded from the plan. If we purchased the meal plan it would have cost $412. That's almost $100.
I think it does save if you have children under 9 and go to character meals since the price of the one meal is more than the daily charge for the plan for a child (or pretty close). As 2 adults, it's pretty hard for us to save money and not be sick.
ETA: we have TIW but the discount covered the tip so I consider that a push.

I saw SO many people on the last trip say "no thanks, no dessert" and all I could think was "ka-ching, ka-ching" for Disney.

I always tip too but when I did my calculations, the savings we got from the TIW went straight to the tip. A $100 check before tip & discount, came out to $98 with tip after the discount which is pretty much the same..that's how I am looking at it.

Yeah, you can think of it as TiW covers tips, which still can add up.
