I need your help!

Ok. I need some help on what to do...

I already lost one tube (right) due to ectopic. 2 months ago, after an IUI I had another ectopic in my left tube. They caught it early enough so I still have that tube.

so my journey towards IVF has begun...

My new RE said that I should think about removing my left tube b/c I only have a slim chance of conceiving on my own and a 80% that it would result in another ectopic..since my tube is defectiveChat Icon
He said that even with IVF there is still a chance of another ectopic... so since my odds are against me already I should get rid of it so my chances are greater for success.

What would you girls do?
I don't know ..

Re: I need your help!

Its a very personal decision but if I felt it would greater my chances to remove that other one, I would do it. Especially since youre already at risk of having a 3rd ectopic.

I have one blocked tube and she said the other one is damaged. Thats why I went straight to IVF instead of trying IUI's .. If she had told me to remove them I wouldve to increase the chances for us.

Good luck with everythingChat Icon

i would get a second, third, and fourth opinion. i would never remove anything from my body without several doctors saying it was the best option. good luck!!

i agree with this 1000%.

i lost my right tube to an ectopic as well and our next step is IVF (we are on a break right now) but nobody has ever mentioned removing my left tube. did your dr tell you what is the statistic for the chance of having an ectopic with IVF?

I have heard of IVF's that ended up as ectopic but since you have a "tube defect" I am assuming your issue is that the fertilized egg can't makes its way out of your tube and into the uterus. If so, then I don't know that your chance for an ectopic with IVF would be any greater than anyone else, unless the doctor says differently, for some reason. Also, what is the "defect" and is it almost certain that any non-IVF pregnancy would result in an ectopic. I would need to know that first. You can always get additional opinions but if time is an issue, me personally, I'd do the IVF with my tube in place.

Re: I need your help!

I am, by no means, a dr. But IVF possibly resulting in an ectopic meaning you should have your tube removed didn't make sense to me. I Googled it (also, not a Dr., but you know...). Here's what I found:

IVF
During IVF treatment, a woman's eggs are removed directly from her ovaries and are fertilised with her partner's sperm outside her body (in a laboratory). The resulting embryos are then inserted directly into her womb. Given that most ectopic pregnancies occur when a fertilised egg gets stuck in the fallopian tube, you might ask how IVF could possibly increase the chances of ectopic pregnancy, since IVF "bypasses" the fallopian tubes altogether. Fertility specialists believe that ectopic pregnancy may occur if, when the embryos are transferred to the womb, they are placed too high in the womb cavity. The embryos then have a greater chance of "wandering" and implanting themselves in places where they are not supposed to be, such as the fallopian tubes. Embryos could also make their way into the fallopian tubes if they are injected into the womb with too much force. In the past, doctors would block the fallopian tubes during IVF treatment to try and prevent ectopic pregnancy from occurring. This method is no longer used.

What Are The Chances?
Between 2 and 5 % of IVF treatments result in ectopic pregnancy. If you are undergoing either IVF or IUI treatment and you do get pregnant, keep an eye out for symptoms of ectopic pregnancy. If you believe you are experiencing any of these symptoms, get medical help immediately.

Basically, I'd try to find the best RE you can find. And get a 3rd opinion with a full explanation. IVF bypasses your tubes and according to the above, if the Dr does the IVF right, it shouldn't result in an 80% chance of another ectopic.

Sorry you have to make this decision! Chat Icon
