Anyone paint their kitchen cabinets?

I saw the idea in Better Homes and Gardens. I would love to paint them black like the picture they had. Just curious if anyone has done it before. If so, did you DIY or did you hire someone.

Our house has really old cabinets in the kitchen - we pained them white. They came out well, but we did hire someone to do it. We were living in the city at the time and hadn't yet moved out, so we had the painter who was working on removing wallpaper and skimcoating and painting the house also do the cabinets.

Re: Anyone paint their kitchen cabinets?

I did ours and it was a bit of a process

I took all the doors down...I wanted to change all the hardware while I was at it. Cleaned ALL the surfaces with Murphys oil soap.
Painted the insides of the cabinets 2 coats...we decided to go with a high gloss so we needed at least 2 coats,.

Since we were changing the hardware on the doors...moving the handles to another spot. I had filled in the holes then sanded. I then primed the doors and then 2 coats of the High gloss paint.

After everything was very dry....high gloss takes a bit longer...then I attached the hardware and re-hung the doors.

It was a very satisfying but time consuming project.

My parents did this a few years back. They had a professional do it. After about 2 years its started peeling. It looks horrible- I wouldn't recommend it

Re: Anyone paint their kitchen cabinets?

We DIY BUT my late father was a painting/wallpaper contractor and helping us along the way. Here is what we did...

We took the doors off and labeled the backs so you know where each one goes when you put it back. I took the hardware off and cleaned them because I spray painted the brass with an oil rubbed bronze spray paint for $3.99 at Home Depot in order to match my new hardware (also Home Depot)

I changed where the holes were. Instead of using wood filler, my dad said to use an auto bonder filler (I think that's what it is lol) he said it works a thousand times better. I put it in the holes let it dry then sanded. The frames and the doors got a good sanding with a 220 grit then a 110.

Before we painted we cleaned down the frames and doors with a water and ammonia mix and just sponged them down.

We didn't prime but we went with an oil based paint because my dad said that the cabinets had poly on them and even though we sanded, it's better safe than sorry so we should use a poly because you have to do oil based on top of oil based to make it stick and last longer.

The paint that we used was BM White Chocolate (like a slight off white) It was very glossy, making it very easy to wipe clean which was nice because you don't want to scrub the paint too hard when cleaning.

Because it was oil based and glossy painting was a pain in the rear. It was up and down coats, never going back over the wet with a very high quality small roller. You have to let each coat dry for 24 hours before applying the second. I think we used 2-3 depending on how much I messed up lol.

We set up saw horses on top of drop cloths in the living room and then put the doors on the saw horses to make it easier to paint. We just did the one side of the doors and then the frames.

I did it! I actually painted them to have a distressed, country look. I primed them all, then painted them black, then painted them cranberry and let the black bleed through. They came out nice. We're actually going to paint them again this year since we changed around the kitchen decor. It's easy to do, just very time consuming since you have to take the doors down, paint both sides including the edges and paint all the frames. In the end though it looks great! Re: Anyone paint their kitchen cabinets?

We did. DH took them all down, sanded them, and painted them white. We used a high gloss paint from Sherwin Williams.

They look so much better than they did before. It took him a bit of time since he waited for one side to dry before painting the other one but, we weren't living there at the time.

The only negative though is I had thought that we could just change the hardware but, I should've researched it beforehand since our holes weren't standard size (I waited until later on in the project and DH was done at that point and didn't want to add new holes).

I was considering doing this in the summer. I read reviews all over the internet. Some were good, some bad. I forget where I read them specifically. But since then my husband heard that his friend at work did it and said it came out looking great -- but was SO much work. I think im going to do it in the spring and just take a week off work!

Before you paint, consider that you will have to maintain it. See this article for important considerations:

We did. DH took them all down, sanded them, and painted them white.

Same plus updated the hardware--It was time consuming but made a world of difference for $150.

Re: Anyone paint their kitchen cabinets?

Ours had been painted by the previous owners. They were painted already but then they did white over it, they painted a flat white over a glossy paint without priming, now its chipping in spots and you can see the green paint under it. We are going to redo it this spring but we'll have to sand everything down and use a specialty primer and paint to really correct the problem. It's going to be tedious.
