Month to month lease?
Does anyone know of any rentals that will let me do this? I'm in Nassau. Our current lease is up in March and we are looking for a house and will most likely be purchasing this year, so we don't want to lock into a 1 year lease anywhere. Thanks!

Re: Month to month lease?
In this climate I cant see many landlords going month to month. See if your CURRENT landlrd will let you.

Re: Month to month lease?
Actually, there are plenty of rentals for which landlords are looking for a month-to-month tenant v. a year term. I've had landlords who prefer that because they are hesitant about committing long-term because they are afraid it won't work out with a tenant or they've been burned before by a "bad" tenant. Also, a lot of times people plan to put the house on the market, or they have the house on the market already but aren't able to sell quickly, and they want to get a renter in there in the meantime so they are not carrying the house after they've moved out.
But I agree with the previous poster that you may be better off staying in your current place and seeing if you can work out a month-to-month arrangement. A lof of my buyer customers who rent are able to leave their rentals with 30 days or 60 days notice, with no penalty (and once you find a house, it will still likely take 60-90 days to close). So you may want to save yourself the hassle of moving --and paying a broker's fee (if you are looking for a whole house rental, most are listed through MLS by realtors) - if you can.
Feel free to contact me if you want some help with either your rental situation or your house hunt.

This.
Month to month tenants are usually preferred with most experienced landlords as it allows the landlord to evict right away if they do not like the tenant.
Most buildings and management companies may prefer the yearly lease to avoid excessive paperwork. However if you are looking whole house rentals, accessory apartments, illegal apartments (like basement), mother/daughter, etc... many of these landlords will want to do month to month.
