Is this your blog? Very comprehensive write up.
I spent the last 3 1/2 yrs working in DC and living in No VA. These are some of my favorites:
Georgetown - great shopping, bars, and restaurants. Walk around M Street and Wisconsin Ave. Filomenas on Wisconsin is fabulous Italian. Mie N Yu on M St is a great bar/restaurant. We would generally go there for a drink before heading to Filomenas for dinner. Atmosphere is great and each section of the place is different, like Turkish, Morrocan, etc. If you're there when it's warm out, head to the waterfront. There are a bunch of outdoor restaurants and bars. A great one is Sequoia.
Zaytinya is a fabulous Greek/Turkish/ Lebanese tapas place. Probably one of the most popular restaurants in DC. After dinner, head over to Proof, which is within walking distance, for wine.
The rooftop bar at the W Hotel is called POV (Point of View) and is a great scene. Great views of the Washington Monument. Drinks are pricey but it's worth it for the view alone. Also, down the block is Old Ebbit Grill, which is quintessential DC and great for dinner.
I would recommend walking around the Mall and taking in all the sites. It's the best way to do it, walking from one end to the other, and you will will literally see the Capitol, the Monument, the WWII Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. You can also walk down to the tidal basin, which is gorgeous, and pop by the Jefferson Memorial. There are also tons of musuems around the Mall, so you have the options of those too. Also, one of my favs is the Sculpture Garden on 7th Street. There's a cafe and you can grab food and if it's nice outside, eat outdoors. It's so pretty.
I miss these places. If you're willing to go outside of DC into NOVA, let me know and I'll give you a bunch more places in my old stomping grounds. Some of the best restaurants were in my old VA neighborhood.
Have a great trip!

Re: Washington DC
I stayed at the Rennaisance hotel in downtown DC several years ago and it was absolutely fabulous. It was attached to the convention center so everything was very accessible and the hotel itself was gorgeous.

Re: Washington DC
I stayed at the Washington Grand Hyatt and it was beautiful with a nice lounge inside. It's also attached to MetroCenter so getting around is easier.
The Round Robin Room is the Willard Hotel was where Mint Juleps were invented and has a nice old DC vibe.
Old Town Alexandria in VA is a little further, but is so quaint and called the most romantic city in the US. It has a very colonial, cobblestone feel.
I love DC, have fun!

Re: Washington DC
Stayed at the
Holiday Inn Central 1501 Rhode Island Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20005 Main: 202 / 483-2000
in January 2008
Short walk to the White House. Pretty centralized location. We went up to Dupont Circle a couple of nights for dinner, most notably to The Frontpage.
Have fun!
