UPDATE: is $2k a lot to turn my closet into a mudroom?

I've seen it on Pinterest & would love to turn a closet we have into a mudroom (it's right by our garage & we use for backpacks, diaper bag, shoes), so it'll be great to have a bench with storage, a light, etc

Anyone else done this? If so I'd love to see pics!

I'd love to see what you did!

My closet is located by garage door, in-between dining room & kitchen. and we already have a coat closet!
So perfect spot for a bench & storage for book bags & such!

If your closet is by the garage, you have the perfect place for a mudroom. We do these all the time now, and you will love it.

I would post a picture, I would (darn ipadsChat Icon ),
Yes, just when you walk in from garage to your right is the closet, then in front is the kitchen/behind is the living room. And to the left is the hall that goes to the coat closet.

So I don't need 2 closets & this has become a throw in of shoes, bags. I'd love a bench to sit & put shoes on.

Too bad I wasn't in NY, or I'd call you for an estimate!!!!!

Ours is more of a traditional mud room, not like the pic in the other post. Will take a pic tomorrow-- I couldn't find any before or progress pics, even though I know I took some!

Re: Anyone turn a closet into a mudroom?

Just took some pics...

The door you see is the garage door. Also, where my daughter's coat rack starts is basically the start of where the closet was. It was a large closet, not just a hall closet-- but it became apparent that we needed a place to throw these things rather than having a more storage like closet. We have a small coat closet upstairs by our front door, but had no storage for our everyday outdoor gear.

This whole area was carpeted, because it's our lower level/playroom. We ripped up the carpet and put in pre-finished wood floors. I will try to find some pic that at least shows the area before we did it.

Still need to get better cubes, but we need to have something custom because of the space. Will also replace the rug. I just bought a mirror that I want to hang in b/t our coats and the garage door.

Re: Anyone turn a closet into a mudroom?

Thank you for sharing!

I updated my post with pictures of my actual closet & space.

It looks sorta small, but the interior walls are actually 41", the doorway opening is only 28", so I'm hoping it can be opened to the molding to the kitchen (left) & dining room (right)

A mirror in there would be a great idea!

Re: Anyone turn a closet into a mudroom?

Does $2K sound like a lot to turn my closet into a mudroom?

they have to open the doorway dryway
Add a hinged bench 24" deep
Add a strip light & switch
Install new red oak flooring, sand, refinish; where door way was removed
Install header for support.

Re: UPDATE: is $2k a lot to turn my closet into a mudroom?

like you have a door already? what do they need to install etc or are you removing the door?

Its both a small project, but still has a some steps.

if there is no light in there, they need to run poewr to the location and from the box to the light, are they adding any outlets? do you want one?

if you're talking about them just removing the door, and having it as an open doorway, what wood floor do they need to patch? it looks like they just pull the door and doorframe out and trim out with some flat stock. Also, unless you're changing the size of the doorway, or height you don't need a new header.

to me I guess 2K seems like it may be on the higher end, but i don't kow specifically what you're getting

I would figure 500 for the electrical, a few hundred to pull the door, and trim the opening and the rest would be the bench.

Yes, they have to open the doorway dry wall a few inches, which will require Installing new red oak flooring, sand, refinish; where door way was removed

I want to add a hinged bench 24" deep
And a light & switch. There is already a socket in there, so does that mean there is some electricity?

The quote we got also said they would Install header for support.

If you're lookign for a definate answer get another quote from someone who is equally good.

There is nothign particularly expensive in what you're doing, but the costs and time do add up.
between dealing with the flooring patch and finishing that. widening the opening, putting the header, repairing the drywall, running the electric and building the bench.

Probably the biggest pain in the neck factor is widening the doorway since it requires the new header, patching the floor and some molding work

assuming you like/trust the company that quoted it, 2K seems like a decent price.
