Re: POLL: About tiling in the kitchen.

We have hardwood floors (bamboo), but it's wall-to-wall. Under the cabinets and appliances. If I was having the floor tiled instead, I would pay to have it wall-to-wall. Extra waterproof layer under the cabinets in case of leaks. It looks better having the tile go under the cabinet, even if only a little bit, instead of butting up against the cabinets. Makes sliding the fridge in and out easier, since it's the same level. If you change the layout, but the tile is staying, you don't have to worry about matching the missing tiles.

Of course, if the tile was $20/tile, I might change my mind... Chat Icon Chat Icon

DH used to work for an architect and is telling me that we tile under the cabinets too...but for some reason I don't want to believe himChat Icon . I would definitely tile under the appliances, that's a no brainer for me.

No, it's not $20 a tile, but around $5 a tile. Actually, we already bought most of it two years ago, just never installed it. Now we have to buy more bc we plan to expand our kitchen into the dining room, and move the dining room to the living room (which we never use since we have a den).

The proper way is wall to wall.

If you tile up to everything, it makes it more difficult to take out appliances if you to replace them, especially the dishwasher. There is really no room.

Wall to wall.

1/ It a better protection
2/ you are not stuck with a kitchen lay out if you ever have to replace your kitchen cabinets but not the floor.

Re: POLL: About tiling in the kitchen.

My tiles go wall to wall, under the counters and appliances.

If the tiles are butt up against an appliance like the dishwasher, you can't pull it out, it has to be lifted. That's a problem if there is a solid counter on top.
