Re: those that are Breast feeding
Do you have close friends or family that have breastfed recently? If not, line up lots and lots of support. La Leche is a great place to start -- you can go to meetings before the baby is born to get advice and meet the leaders.
Buy a really great nursing pillow (or two) like the Boppy and My Breast Friend.
Buy Tivo if you like watching TV. You'll be sitting on the couch for many, many hours!
Buy Lansinoh cream.
Remember, it is really really hard in the beginning for most moms, and painful too for a bit of time. You will be exhausted. It gets better and is very worth the effort!!!
Lots of us here have been through it, so let us know if you have questions, we will cheer you on!!

Happy to help if you have questions. Good place to go for information and questions is kellymom.com.
ETA: I'm having an awful time but sticking it out so if you have any issues that come up I'd be happy to listen or help. It is very important to have support. I found a nice support group in the area that meets twice a month which has been very helpful.

fortunately, Ella made it easy on me. She latched on right away, and takes bottles with no problem. I don't know what I would have done if it would have been difficult.
I did have some engorgement and soreness for a week or two in the beginning.

same here. no problems, right from the start, except for some engorgement. alexander LOVES to eat so i BF mainly from 9pm to 9am with maybe an hour and a half BF in the afternoon ... otherwise it's all bottle. i feel guilty giving him bottles but i just couldn't kep up w/ his eating habits. my doctor has told me NOT to feel guilty that as long as he's getting SOME it's better than NONE, so don't feel 'trapped' into exclusively BF

Re: those that are Breast feeding
ugh. not very well. DD is two weeks old today & i still think she is latching on incorrectly, but i can't seem to get her to open her mouth wide enough. i've tried so many different ways to get her on properly, but i think we get it wrong half the time. which has led to a lot of pain & sore nipples. so i'm frustrated. i've been to a LC twice so far, and they've helped a lot, but still...
i started pumping anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 ounces after her morning feeding. DH feeds her the bottle around 9 pm to give me (& my boobs) a break!

Re: those that are Breast feeding
Tips from a BTDT mom who pumped for a year: It is NOT easy...KNOW that there will be some hard times but you can make it thru them.
Get professional help if you need it. IT costs $ but it is still cheaper than formula.
A good pump is worth the money- don't get a cheap pump because it can actually hurt your supply.
When you think you can't do it one more day...just take it hour by hour if you have to. Don't make long goals at first. Just keep things simply.
Get support and ask the naysers to please keep their mouth shut!

Re: those that are Breast feeding
Just know that it can be really hard in the beginning, but it won't stay that way. I'd say the first month is difficult, figuring out positioning, trying to get the baby latched on properly, keeping the baby awake to eat, constantly wondering if the baby is getting enough to eat... But once you and the baby get the hang of it, it's so easy. There were many times I wanted to give up, but I kept trying and I'm so glad I did. Don't be afraid to ask for help and support!
