So what did you do with $$ for your DC...
that you got from a christening or such?
Savings account...
CD...
Stocks...
or some other method of savings? Trying to figure out what to do for Kerri....anyone have info on the 529 college plan?

We put any money the kids get into their 529 account. We have one set up for each of them. My DH opened the account online and said it was real simple and took him only a few minutes.

So you didn't have to go through a broker? You can do it online?

As of now we've only recieved $105 for Emily -- so we just have it in an envelope and when she gets more we'll open up a savings account for her. We were thinking about doing an ING account because of the better interest rates. I don't know anything about managing money so I don't really know what our other options are.

We put it in her savings account, but I'm going to look into the 529 plan.
Also--ING is offering 5% on a 9 month CD, the rate is pretty good compared to most banks. I'm going to open an additional CD fo rher.

They have mutual fund accounts with Smith Barney. (yes a broker, my roommate from college)

can someone explain the 529 account to me or how they allocated the funds? Just wondering b/c there are so many ways to allocate the money and then on the website i see, "qualified withdrawals will be subject to federal tax after 2010"
are they tax free deposits though? Like an IRA where you get up to a certain amount a year tax free?
