DH and I looked for about 6 months I believe and we were going to bid on another house when we insisted on looking at one last one before going to the realtor's office.

the house we ended up with needed a lot of work but like your DH, mine is also very handy and what sold us was we would get so much more room and property for our money compared to the other house we were going to bid on. We went with the mentality that "you can always change and update a house but you can't make it bigger or drastically change the layout."

It's been a long journey since we are still remodeling but i don't think we settled. we did ALMOST settle several times during the process.

we were looking for almost 2 years, we went into contract for a new home to be built and then the builders could not get the permits , months and months later - so we started looking again, we went to some more open houses then I made an apt to see our house - we walked in and I could see us living there, even thought it needed a lot of work - I kept thinking about it!! A week we went back to see it again with our parents and then we made an offer.

DH hated our house for a number of reasons. I liked it but didn't love it. We saw other houses and I kept going back to this house. I Convinced DH to see it again and I explain the furniture layout etc...he started to see the big picture. This home works for us and we didn't have to do anything to this house. Down the road we would want to fully dormer the house (its currently front dormered) to make its a 3/4 bedroom and put our own touches to it.

I knew it was the house, however, after we moved in and i realized how much harder it would be to correct all the problems I started to wonder..... We have since done all of the major work that we needed to do and now I love it. There are a few things I would love to change but nothing major. I'd also like a bigger piece of property but in the town we live in we actually have a decent sized lot.
