Family and forgiveness

Why is it that people are so forgiving and so tolerant of their family members, but much less with friends?

Like if friend A said something to hurt you, that would be 'strike one' in the friendship. But if mom or cousin made the same hurtful comment, they just brush it off or say 'thats just the way he/she is?"

I'm not being sarcastic, this is just what i have noticed among my own friends and family, that I just don't understand.

Re: Family and forgiveness

IMO there is a HUGE difference between a family memeber as opposed to a friend!

Re: Family and forgiveness

because it's your family and as much as we don't like they are always going to be there for you regardless. some friends won't.

Because you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family.

What is the difference and why does it matter?

My family i put on a MUCH higher level than any one of my friends.
Family IMO is MOST more important than anything.

Friends have always and will continue to go in and out of your life. Family for me is a permanent thing from the moment i was born to the day i die!
I would do ANYTHING for my family.

That's the odd thing. My friends family treats her like crap, her friends are the ones who take care of her, but she would NEVER (her words, not mine) cut the family off. Chat Icon

my ils are the same way. DH and I are very distant from them, but we still have the same friends from 7th grade.

I think this is odd also.. I am not sure why people find it so easy to write off friends (who can sometimes treat you better than your own family).

I am very close to my siblings so I know I would never cut them off, but as far as cousins that wrong me and inlaws...I don't need the aggravation.

Re: Family and forgiveness

it depends.....I have written off family for things they've done and misery they have caused and I've had friends that I've forgiven for certain things.

Forgiveness is necessary to moving on in life, if you hold on to things, it makes you a miserable person
