Wow What a Ridiculous Slap in the Face!!
Sorry I just had to share this here because I know you all will commiserate...
I changed healthcare plans since my company paid COBRA ended at the end of November.
I was just reading the documentation on the new plan. For infertility all it covers is the testing that is deemed mandatory coverage in NYS. There's no coverage for IUI, IVF..etc.... HOWEVER, the plan does cover 1 elective abortion per calendar year...
W.T.F is that?!?!

Re: Wow What a Ridiculous Slap in the Face!!
i don't want to start an argument here but i just don't see how the two things are related. yes, it's HORRIBLE that insurance companies aren't required to provide FULL IF coverage. BUT, that has nothing to do with abortion. when i had to end my pregnancy in 2009, it was a termination for medical reasons (that i was urged to do by many doctors) but in the end it was classified as an "elective abortion" and i'm so grateful our insurance covered it b/c if it had not, we would've had no options at all

Aww, I don't think OP was saying that abortion is never necessary. Of course we know sometimes the pregnancy we want so desperately can endanger some women's lives.
I think it's just mean that the ins. co. will pay to end a life but not to create one.

Termination for reasons like ectopic pregnancy or genetics is not the same as someone getting pregnant and just not wanting a baby. To each is own. I'm all for pro-choice but the fact that ins will pay for an abortion and not pay to help someone get pregnant is just sick. I think that was the OPs main point (unless Im wrong there too)

I wouldve been screwed since I had two D&C's in 6 months --- on the insurance claim it lists it as missed abortion.

Now THAT is ridiculous! They really need to differentiate a m/c or ectopic vs an abortion.

yes, obviously im all for covering an abortion/d&c/d&e thats medically necessary due to a problem with the mom/baby. i hope to G-D that no one has to go through that once a year and highly doubt that the coverage suggests that it may be medically necessary once a year but hey i didnt write the plan...
to be honest, I am pro choice also. BUT i do have a problem with the insurance company greedy monster machine saying that its OK that we cant get pregnant, thats not a covered medical expense because then they have to pay A LOT more money out to cover you. however if you make a mistake once a year you are fully 100% covered for a medically unnecessary abortion.
so basically they are saying that since abortions are cheap and wont lead to added expenses on their part, that its fine to cover them on a once a year basis. however if you need an IUI or IVF to get pregnant, that isn't medically necessary enough to warrant the insurance company reaching into their own pockets. just to clear it up, THAT is my problem... obviously if you need an abortion for medical issue with the baby or mom, that's not what I'm complaining about and frankly i dont think i needed to justify that on a forum like this but whatever...

i have the utmost respect for you Flowerwife so i apologize if my post came across wrong. i was not asking for justification from you. i just don't see the 2 things as being related. there are lots of things insurance companies should cover that they don't and IF is definitely one of them.

no worries. the entire topic of insurance enrages me. its not your fault. im sorry if i came across as uncaring about different reasons for abortion. i def dont lump them together, even if the insurance text does!!
