For those who rent
How did you find your apartment? We want to rent out our condo and we have it on Craigslist, Newsday.com and apartments.com...any other ideas?

This isn’t really going to help any…
I found out about my apt complex through a friend. They do no advertising whatsoever and yet they have a waiting list a mile long. I guess word of mouth is the best advertising in their case.
try putting in the Town Crier as well.

Our current apt was found in our town's pennysaver.
We spoke with our landlords after we got it and asked why they only went that route and didn't advertise in Newsday, Craigslist, etc.
They said they were originally going to go through a realtor/friend, but she explained the costs it would be to the renter and suggested that they ONLY advertise in the town's pennysaver. Her reasoning was you'll get local people. She explained when you start advertising in those are areas you're getting a "wide array" of people...people you may not in your home, etc.
Other apts since I've been down here...
2 were found on Newsday - 2 WORST apts...turned out to be nightmares!
1 through friend/word of mouth - wonderful apt.
Definitely word of mouth or local pennysaver is the way to go IMHO.

The renter pays the fees, not the owner. I paid the realtor in both cases for finding us the apartments.

Yep, we found ours through a realtor and we paid the fees, not the homeowner.

I found my last apt on LI through the pennysaver. I have done the realtor thing too and they definitely show better places. The fee was ridiculous though (one month's rent). Since you don't have to pay that (being the landlord) it make sense for you to go through a realtor. It saves you so much work. When I used one, they did it all for the landlord - ran the credit check, had me fill out the lease, negotiated the rent, etc.

When we rented, we got our first apartment through a coworker who was moving out. For our second apartment, we tried Pennysaver, Newsday, online sites, and all we saw was junk. We called Century 21 and the first night we went out with the realtor we found our apartment. For us it was worth the expense of the finder's fee to save time.

When I lived on Long Island, the first apartment in Farmindale, I had I found through a realtor. I got really lucky with the apartment too!
