Hydrangeas - fall clean up

My landscapers are doing the fall cleanup right now. I just went out to check on them and see that they cut all my hydrangeas down to 9-inch tall stubs. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Many of them were waist-high or taller this year. I usually just let them be, and pull off the dried-out flowers in the spring. Don't the flowers grow on last year's wood? Will I get flowers next year?

Mine get cut down every fall and they grow back nice and full (if not bigger!) every year. I wouldn't worry.

That's what your supposed to do. They will grow back fuller and have more flowers next year.

We don't have landscapers, but we cut ours down, and they bloom back each year with larger more fuller blooms. I wouldn't worry!

My husband cut mine to like 3 inch stubs last year. I almost killed him, I got very few flowers this year. I'm not cutting mine AT ALL this year.

It depends on a few things, such as the variety of hydrangeas. Many of them bloom on old wood, but the 9 inches might be enough. You aren't supped to cut them down the ground.

We did this after our first year in the house based on advice from someone I'll never take it from again. We've been in our house now for 4.5 years & the hydrangeas have never been the same.Chat Icon

Re: Hydrangeas - fall clean up

My landscapers cut them down to about 1.5ft tall this year. We've never cut them back that far so I pray they grow back and bloom!

When we first moved in April 2009, my FIL cut them back and one never flowered that year. The other two flowered, but they were tiny compared to the flowers we got in 2010 and 2011. (The blooms were as big as my head this year!) I wonder if it was because he cut them back too late?
