VERY fussy feedings....
Lately, Ava has been SO fussy during her bottles. She vocalizes as she's sucking and and keeps saying "Ehh, ehh, ehh" as she's eating and flails her arms and legs. I don't think it's gas because as soon as I take the bottle away, she's fine. Any ideas what's going on? She gets really annoyed while eating and I've tried a few different bottles and nipples, all the same results.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
Grace does this too sometimes. I think it is because I was waiting until she cried to give her a bottle and by time I got it together, she was SO upset. Now I try to read her hunger cues more often and when I do the flailing arms and stuff stopped. Try giving her a bottle 5-10 minutes before you think she needs one. If you see her eating her hands or squirming around, try to get the bottle together then. HTH

Peyton was doing this for a while. I found that I had to stand up with her and kind of rock her. She didn't like it when I was sitting down. She liked the motion. Just a suggestion.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
I'm thinking it's either her reflux or the nipple size. I'm going to try the next size nipple and see what happens. Thanks

My sister's daughter has reflux and is the same way. Can you try feeding her in a more upright position?

Trying to read her cues and feed before crying helped us alot. It also put dd on a schedule that we were able to all follow pretty easily.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
I definately think it is reflux related... Poor little Ava -- my sister has the same thing going on with her daughter though...and I've heard of it happening a lot with reflux babies.

did you try the bigger nipple? i did and it was a mess, hannah choked even though i held her up at a 90 degree angle to feed and she dribbled all down her chin. i just called my ped about this, maybe he will have some insight as to what is going on.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
Joanna, I just got back from the store, and when she wakes up from her nap, I will try it. I have a feeling it's reflux related and not nipple related, but my mother pointed out that she keeps falling asleep during her feedings and she may be working too hard to get the formula out. So we shall see. I'm sorry to hear Hannah had a yucky experience

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
Are you feeding your baby every 3 to 4 hours? That used to happen with my daughter (when i fed her) because i thought she was hungry and fed her when she really had gas or was tired. Now i space the feeding 3-4 hours and she is the happiest baby.

Is she arching her back, too? Sounds like the reflux to me, too.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
Hi, I had that problem with my son. He's a very good eater but had suddenly started crying and fussing through his bottles and slapping it away and crying after. Our pediatrician started him on Zantac and that really seemed to help. He told us to use a little Mylanta in the meantime. 1/4 tsp. 4 times a day before and after his feeding.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
The daughter that was fussy (Syd) during her feeding i took her to the Gastro Doc and they suggested giving Malox 1/2 teaspoon before the feeding..that helps coat the stomach and it worked like a charm.

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
Thank you for all of your responses ladies. I did a lot of observing the rest of today and it is DEFINITELY her reflux. My doctor is away until Monday, so I can't even call him to ask about the Mylanta. I am pretty sure that would help because the Zantac just isn't enough. Thanks everyone

How many times a day do you give her mylanta? And how much does she weigh?

on Monday @ her 2month visit she weighed 8.1lbs.
Joanna and I have been using it sparingly for what seems like crisis mode... It hasn't been more than 3x per day/night, I think....
Too much can cause diarrhea b/c it has magnesium
good luck

Re: VERY fussy feedings....
I know I had a similar problem when I used the Ventaire bottles. The size 1 nipples were too small (DD couldn't get anything out of them) and the size 2 nipples were too big (all the milk would dribble all over her face and then she would spit it all up). I stopped using them and went back to my regular bottles.
