Joining the IF board...Please tell me about HSG

I think I am officially joining this board. I saw an RE two weeks ago and AF came today so it looks like I will be going forward with his checklist. First on the list is an HSG. Can you answer some questions for me?

1. Did anyone find a place that did it after work/on weekends?

2. Can I go to work afterwards or is this going to hurt? Can I drive?

3. They said no Chat Icon from now until then. Why?

4. Anything else I should know?

Welcome to the greatest support group in the world! Chat Icon

First thing's first- on CD3 you should go to RE to have CD3 bloodwork taken. Did they tell you that?
Here's what I can tell you about your HSG. I had mine done at the hospital. Double check to see what your insurance covers first so that you're prepared. Mine wasn't because it was out of network, and I hadn't ever had that before.

I am not sure if anyone does it on weekends. Check with RE to see where they recommend you go for it.

I discovered at my HSG that I have a curved cervix. This made it difficult to insert the catheter, and it didn't hurt much until afterwards. Here's basically how it went:
Change into a hospital gown, stripped from the waist down. There is a doctor and he had 2 nurses with him. They cover your chest with a lead pad and pull an x-ray screen horizontally about 4 inches above your abdomen. They insert the speculum, and showed me what's going on inside there on a tv screen next to me. The nurses prep the "area" with iodine solution. The Dr. then inserted the catheter in (this hurt mebecause he had a hard time and he was poking around for a little bit) Then they injected the dye and I watched on the screen as the dye made its way all around the tubes- no blockage!

I was relieved, but when the nurses helped me up from the table, I had a lot of blood/iodine (sorry tmi) So they helped me pad up then sent me into the bathroom to clean up and change. They have industrial sized pads in there, thank God.

I was uncomfortable for the rest of the day because of the soreness of them poking around and some discharge and spotting. I wasn't able to go to work afterwards, and I rested for awhile before getting up to make dinner. I took 2 Advil and I was fine, but sore.

I was told no BD until then because they want a clean slate and pelvic rest when they do the HSG.

Everyone's experience has been slightly different. Some people go right to work!

Hope this helps you in some way!

Thanks that was super helpful, and very encouraging already. I've been reading a little bit here just to beef up my vocabualry for what might come and I would agree that this board is really great support.
