Is Amount of Lovenox I'm Taking Excessive?
Hi,
I had been on one 30mg shot of Lovenox as part of my immune protocol with my IVF even though I am in fact compound heterozygous for MTHFR. My Dr. did not seem to think I needed a blood thinner for just the MTHFR. I then saw a peri (Kofinas)this week and he put me on 40mgs of Lovenox 2x's a day? Does that sound excessive to anyone? I do have slightly elevated NK cells..but that's it. If anyone goes to Kofinas, did he ever lower your doasge? They gave me a test to take in a week or so to measure my levels and I'm assuming they do that to know how much Lovenox I should really be on. Thanks.

It is pretty standard. It could be because you are clotting.

Re: Is Amount of Lovenox I'm Taking Excessive?
no, not excessive. dr T is way too relaxed about MTFHR, i also have homozygous C gene mutation and he also told me at the time that I do not need lovenox at all. While Braverman put me on 40mg right away ( which i believe is the right way, based on tons of research that i did). I would trust Kofinas with this 100%. GL!

I have MTHFR among other issues and I am on 2 (40 mg) lovenox a day right now, plus baby aspirin.

Re: Is Amount of Lovenox I'm Taking Excessive?
Okay ladies thanks...I was a little worried there for a minute.
Curious..I hope all continues to be well with you!! That is strange about Dr.T not putting you on Lovenox. I have always read that two C mutations needs Lovenox. My mutation...not so much although many women swear that they have not been able to carry to term without Lovenox. I'm glad that Dr. T finally did put me on it, but it was for my immune issues. I say..better safe than sorry.

Re: Is Amount of Lovenox I'm Taking Excessive?
I am on 80 2x a day so anything less than that is not excessive to me.
I am on it because I had 3 clots in my leg.

thank you very strange indeed.. i read so much on it, i joined yahoo MTFHR group, read almost all clinical trial papers and studies. homozygous C def needs lovenox. I read that A gene mutation, which is less severe, might or might not need it. But you are right, better safe than sorry. even though lovenox is not without side effects, i will take them any minute of it helps me to deliver a healthy baby. Good luck!

Re: Is Amount of Lovenox I'm Taking Excessive?
Sorry to hijack but what if you have A and C like me? Isn't that called compound hetero? Would you say that needs lovenox?
Dr. B said a while back he thought that was too aggressive for me, so I am only on metnax and a baby aspirin.
What do you think?

Re: Is Amount of Lovenox I'm Taking Excessive?
Thanks again ladies...Ali..I guess you get the prize!!
Maybemommy...congrats on the birth of your babies!! They are adorable. When you say infusions..do you mean intralipids until your 5th month? I am supposed to be on them too until my 5th month.
Leb...I have the same mutation as you do..one A and one C mutation. It is called being compound heterozygous. Like Dr. B, Dr. T told me that I did not need to be treated with Lovenox for this mutation as my homocysteine levels were normal. I believe that the research backs them both up on this with respect to our mutation. Some women with our mutation in an excess of caution do take Lovenox. It's really hard to know what to do. I am taking the Lovenox not because of my MTHFR as far as Dr. T is concerned, but because of my immune issues. As far as Dr. Kofinas, I've only met with him once but I think he is aggressive in his protocols and believes that Lovenox should be taken with our mutation. I'm not sure if my pregnancy will make it, but if I do get a chance to see Dr. Kofinas again, I will ask him.
I wish these Dr.'s would get this straight. Now there have been recent studies which seem to say that Lovenox is not needed for ANY of the MTHFR mutations as long as homocysteine levels are normal and many Dr.'s are denying their patients this drug. It's just terrible. Even when my Dr. did not think it was needed for me, he said that he would treat me with it if I wanted it. It's not fair that babies are being lost while the medical profession tries to figure this out. I would suggest that you join the MTHFR yahoo group that Curious spoke of and see what real-life women have to say about this.

For your pregnancy!
Thanks so much for answering me.
I have some immune issues too, thyroid antibodies from Hashimotos and NK. My homocysteine levels say 4.7 and between 4.7-12.6 is normal, so I guess I just squeezed into the normal catagory.
I did join the yahoo group, but haven't figured it out yet, seems all I get is tons of emails.

Go into your group preferences and switch from single e-mails to either no e-mails or a daily digest. You will then get just one e-mail a day that contains all of the messages for the day...if there are a lot..you may get two a day. You might also want to join the Reproductive Immunology group.
