We made a sweet potatoe soup a few years ago and everyone loved it. I don't have the recipe handy, but I'm pretty sure I got it from Food Network's website.

i made the carrot thyme soup from pioneer woman the other day but you have to make it the day before so the flavors set in. it was awesome on the second day!

My first thought was sweet potato bisque but that carrot thyme sounds yummy too. imo, I would not do tomato. I don't think the acid in tomato goes with anything on a traditional Thanksgiving table.

I am going to be honest here...love the your idea but i think having it in a bread bowl is too much, that's basically a meal (well for me). I love the french onion soup idea.

i thought of this too, but since im making it myself im going to make smaller breads. so it wouldnt really be a FULL bowl or a BIG bread
probably a little bigger than dinner roll size, but not too much bigger
thanks for everyone else's thoughts. im concerned about a potato soup in bread. too many carbs too soon, no?
cate - tell me about this carrot soup? does it taste like carrots? like, for example, if i HATE carrot juice would i still like this soup?

Re: what is a good soup choice for thanksgiving?
no, its full on carrots. i barely tasted the thyme and the honey (the only other ingredients are veggie stock, cream and salt). I'd actually recommend taking out a third of the carrots and keeping the rest of the ingredients the same. but if you dont like carrots, its not the soup for you!

The more I think about it, the more I think the sweet postat is overkill as I'm sure you'll have it in some form on the table for dinner. I'd go French onion
