Lock Your Sheds/Garages

DH and I came home last night and he wanted to give our grass the final cut before the winter and blow some leaves.

Turns out, we were robbed!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon People S*CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They stole our leafblower, weedwacker, all the "good" fishing poles and other miscellaneous stuff.

I'm so angry. We're racking our brains thinking who would have done this. We called some sprinkler guy from the Pennysaver to turn off our sprinklers while we weren't home. Also, we have a guy that is hard up and not working who usually does yard work for us, he knows what's in there. I hate thinking this way but it's leaf season and the guy needs cash so my first thought was him.

Anyway, we stupidly left it unlocked a few times. Lesson learned!!!!!!

Just a PSA to advise - Lock your doors! Chat Icon

do you have a fence? bc i feel like it would have to be someone who knew you had a shed back there and it was unlocked.

bc the odds of someone going into every backyard and seeing if there is a shed and if its locked seems like too much work.

i just told my husband about this and were going to start locking ours bc we always leave it open and tell everyone who works on our yard/pool that its open and to just go in when they do work!

Google maps will give a pretty good idea of who in the neighborhood has a shed. I would think that most people would leave it unlocked, so it probably wouldn't be that difficult to just check the pre-selected yards for open sheds. Odds are pretty good of finding an unlocked one.

I always lock my shed door. It's a double-cylinder, so even if they break the door window, they can't unlock the door from inside.

Re: Lock Your Sheds/Garages

I'm sorry this happened to you. This economy brings out the worst in people. I forgot to lock my car door one night (or maybe my 16month old unlocked it by accident cuz he likes to play with the remote) and someone stole the GPS out of my center console. I know it was taken from my driveway too. I remember getting into my car the next morning and the seat was pulled way back. Chat Icon DH's convertor was taken out and left on the passenger seat. So I thought to myself, DH messed with my car again last night. He sometimes plays with the stereo, syncs his iphone with the bluetooth, etc. If he sat in it he'd pull the seat back all the way cuz he's 6'-5".

So fast forward a couple weeks. We had to go to a wedding. DH's said map it out on the GPS. It was then that I realize it was gone! Chat Icon I'm so mad. DH said file a police report anyways even though it's been a few weeks. The chances of us getting it back is next to none but at least the police will tighten up the patrol in the area and make sure our neighbors don't get robbed.

Re: Lock Your Sheds/Garages

my cousins shed was broken into. they think the gardeners took it, because they only took the lawn mower and other lawn care tools and not the snow blower.

Yea, people do suck. We had some metal stuff stolen out of our backyard and we know who did it. They did it to scrap it. DH told me to just let it go, but we have so little as it is, to have stuff stolen from us just made me feel so violated. I will remind DH to lock the shed today.

This is happening a lot in my friends neighborhood in MD - a white van drives around the development disguising itself as a work truck and taking things out of people's sheds.

We've always locked the shed and garage... I have a father who grew up in a bad neighborhood... he drilled it in me...
I even remember a combo lock on my parent's shed in 1973Chat Icon

but until this thread I didn't think of locking the gate of my fence... will be doing that pronto!

Not condoning it at all but three years into this economy and many people are growing very desperate... I'm really sorry this happened to you.

Re: Lock Your Sheds/Garages

Thank you, everyone! I want to slap both myself and DH for having the "it will never happen" mentality. Well, lesson learned, it happens and quite often from what i'm hearing.

Ughghgh so frustrating!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
