Glen Cove School District?

What can you tell me about it? What about Plainedge?

I'm all over the map, believe me, but this is a Queens girl moving to LI, and I know next to nothing. I'm probably going to update this with more SDs to consider.

Thanks to all w/ input!

Re: Glen Cove School District?

GC gets a reputation it doesn't quite deserve, because it is surrounded by really great districs, and it has had some problems in the past. The schools have won awards recently, including the Blue Ribbon award at the elementary school level. I'm not going to pretend it is one of the best districs on LI, because it just isn't. But it is still a good education. Check out that Great Schools website... also Newsday lists the percentages going to 2/4 year schools after graduation, and % earning a regents diploma. The rates on both are good.

I had the same concerns about the district when I was looking to buy here. After I did the research, I felt like it would be a good fit for our family. Your research might lead you to a totally different conclusion, which is fine, but don't write it off based on reputation alone. I almost did, and am so glad i didn't!

The city itself is a mixed bag... There are some amazing parts, and some downright sketchy parts. There is great value to be had in terms of real estate. I've been here a few years now, and love it. I'm very glad I made the decision to call GC home.

Sorry for the novel... If you have any specific questions, feel free to FM me.

Re: Glen Cove School District?

I agree with the above poster, I'm from glen cove and my family and friends still live there. I've attended the schools and while they are not the best, they definitely don't get the credit they deserve. I've been out of the schools for a while now but talking with family they said they've been improving, it's a very diverse city, some really nice parts, other not so nice. But in the end it's a great place and DH and I are hoping to buy a home there in a few years,

I went to one the surrounding schools. Growing up, I always thought Glen Cove was a “bad school” but it really is not. There are some bad areas… but all in all, the school district is fine. If I could have afforded it, I would have bought in Glen Cove.

My parents live in neighboring Sea Cliff, and my kids have a few kids in their classes who come from Glen Cove. Gorgeous homes in very nice, well kept areas. I wouldn't hesitate to live in some areas of Glen Cove, but I would still send my kids to private school, just as all my kids friends who live there do. JMO.

Re: Glen Cove School District?

I grew up in the surrounding area and went to religion classes with a lot of kids who went to glen cove schools. They did not have good things to say about them growing up. Then again, I graduated in the mid 90s. I am not sure how they are now. The reputation they had was not the greatest. As in every school it is really what you make of it, how involved you are as a parent and your particular child. I too would look at the newsday listing for test scores. Go to the library. Go look at the schools and see for yourself - I would call ahead and ask for a tour. Would I send my kids there, most likely no. A lot of people who live there send their children to Friends Academy or Portledge, in Locust Valley, or St. Dominics in Glen Cove.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Some of you mentioned sending our kids to private school, but that's not an option for us. Part of the reason we're moving to LI is so we don't have to.

Thanks again.

we live in the plainedge district (north massapequa) and love the area!

Plainedge is a great school district. Small, great sports and extra circular activites.

in the past, there have been budget issues but not in the past few years.

I live in the next town over- GlenHead, North shore SD. Glen Cove is a GREAT area, I'm not sure of SD.
You should look into SeaCliff and Glen Head.
