PGD....Is it necessary? UPDATED
Well let me give you a little history and maybe this will help clear up why it's a suggesstion.
I had two miscarriages prior to a healthy DD. This time around, wasn't ovulating, so did one round of Clomid and IUI, which didn't work, so we went to IUI w/ injectibles. There's also a MF infertility. IUI worked, but had chemical. Because of the recurrent miscarraiges they recommend the PGD. I don't know much about it, and I see your point on risking the embryo's to test.
We are def doing iVF now it's just a matter of doing IVF with the PGD or not. I feel like if I do IVF and have another miscarriage it's going to be more emotional strain on me and were back at square one AGAIN.
I'm nervous if we jump to IVF with PGD though, because of the costs but also because its still not 100% guarenteed. I just don't know what to do about it. I think IVF is the logical next step given our history and problems on both our ends.
What are your thoughts.
I've had a chemical pregnancy after an IUI with injectibles. My RE is recommending PGD with IVF. Has anyone done this? Is it really necessary? They say it's going to cost about $7,000. I've heard some Dr's may be a little less expensive. It's a lot of money, but totally worth it if it's going to work. I'm just so torn on what to do.

Re: PGD....Is it necessary?
WOW.... What exactly is your diagnosis? Do you or DH have genetic diseases or chromosomal translocations? Are you over the age of 35? I don't see a reason to do PGD based upon 1 chemical pregnancy after an injectible IUI. PGD is not something that should be taken lightly because you compromise the embryo inorder to do the biopsy. If you watch the "Little People" on TLC (season finale is on tonight) they talk about foregoing PGD even with their genetic skeletal disorders because of the risks. I honestly don't understand why your RE would suggest PGD or even moving on to IVF with only doing one IUI injectible cycle. Why not just try another IUI? Even after 5 failed IVF's, I've only begun to consider COH, a less invasive form of testing.

i couldn't agree more. this seems way unnecessary unless theres a known genetic issue or carrier issue.

Re: PGD....Is it necessary?
PGD is typically used when there is a known genetic issue. Based on the history you've shared with us, I see no reason why PGD would be recommended.
I actually have a known genetic issue - a balanced chromosomal translocation, and my doctor didn't insist on PGD b/c he believes that embryos can correct themselves in utero and that PGD often results in getting rid of potentially viable embryos.

Re: PGD....Is it necessary?
That seems like a jump after one IUI that ended in a chemical. I would put my money towards testing for clotting and immune issues first. It's less expensive and might get to the root of whether or not there is an issue or not in these areas. Also..if you are older...I would consider not dong it as testing can damage some embryos. As you get older...you really do not want to damage the few normal eggs that we have left.
