Cost of casement windows vs "regular" windows?
How do casement windows compare in prices compared to "regular" windows or sliders?
TIA

Re: Cost of casement windows vs "regular" windows?
We're doing casement windows in our basement and I'm assuming they were cheaper than the regular double-hung windows I had wanted. We went with casement because they offered a larger escape/egress area for town codes.
I believe there are some casement windows that are made to look like regular double-hung ones, too....so in case town code requires only one casement window and you want it to match the other windows in your house you can take this route as well.

my understanding is that generally casements are more expensive than double hung windows.
you should really get a quote on what you want for casement and double hung and compare. you probably will be picking a different size/configuration between the two and it can vary the price significantly

Re: Cost of casement windows vs "regular" windows?
We used to have casement windows throughout our house when we bought them. I HATED THEM!!!! They are a pain to open, you can't clean the outside easily, windows ACs don't fit, the mechanisms kept getting hung up, breaking, getting stuck, etc. I also don't think they are anywhere near safe enough for fire egress, at least the ones that we had. You'd have to crank on them for a while to open them all the way up, and even then, the window gets in the way of getting out.
They were windows from the 80's, so it's possible many of those issues are resolved now, but I would never look at casement windows myself, just based on my own bad experience.

I have casements & they ARE more expensive & I hate them! The cranks are constantly being replaced at $25 a pop. You can't clean them well & they bang if its windy outside

Re: Cost of casement windows vs "regular" windows?
we just replaced all of the windows on the first floor of our house. we have double hung in the back and casement in the front two rooms with art glass inserts in them. we have no issues with banging in wind or "escaping" through them (they open all the way out so there's nothing obstructing the opening). the casement were much more expensive - i don't know the exact numbers but i'd say around 1.5 times what the double hung cost us.

Re: Cost of casement windows vs "regular" windows?
Just wanted to add that I've heard from home inspectors at several inspections that casement windows are the best type of windows you can have in terms of energy-efficiency. Don't know if that's true or not, but more than one inspector has said that.
But in terms of quality, I think like everything else, it probably varies. I am sure Pella or Anderson casement windows are great quality, as are all of their windows, regardless of type. I do think with windows, you do usually get what you pay for.

My horrible casements were Andersen windows....
Casement windows can be more energy efficient than double-hung, but mine leaked so bad I could actually feel a breeze by some of the windows....

Re: Cost of casement windows vs "regular" windows?
I have casement windows in the front of my house and I hate them. I am replacing them with double-hung. I dislike them because we don't have central air and you can't put an AC in there. They are hard to open and difficult to clean. I also dislike them because we have them in my son's room and there is a window seat under them. We need a window guard but you can't put a regular window guard there. We basically need to put a baby gate across the window which is a total PITA.

We got casement windows that tilt in to open and they cost about half the price of the regular double hung windows. If you don't use them much, casements are cheaper alternatives.

We got rid of our casements last year. i am so glad to be rid of them. We had them replaced with double hung windows. Our old ones were not that old and were broken.

Casements are more money. They are suppose to be more energy efficient. We just got new ones last year and they are not drafty at all. Plus they are easy to clean as they have been newly designed. Our cranks collapse into place so they are not sticking out.
