UPDATE: Cleaning w/lint brush didn't work...
Ok, we tried to clean out the dryer (lint trap) with the lint brush and the dryer is still not working good. You still need to put the dryer on at least 2 times (60 minutes at a time) to dry the clothes. This has been going on for over a 1.5 years now and I'm sick of it! Any other suggestions?
ETA: The dryer is getting super hot and spinning, just not drying the clothes.
We currently have a Whirlpool washer and dryer. We had someone try to fix it 2 times, which they said they did, but the didn't. We bought them in 9/2004. Is it just time to retire them? I'm NOT spending more money having someone come fix it since they don't seem to know how? And the washer has been fixed once too.

I still think it's the exhaust vent that's the problem. If it's getting hot and spinning, the only other component involved is venting the hot, wet air.
If the vent pipe is clear, try taking it off the back of the dryer, then running a load. You should be able to feel the hot air exhausting from where the pipe should be attached. If you can feel the hot air venting, then it's something somewhere along the vent.
If you can't feel any significant amount of air, then it's inside the dryer. Either a buildup of lint inside the machine and/or a piece of clothing get caught in the vent.

I will definitely try that. Though I thought my DH said that the vent was already off of the dryer or wall (we didn't know)? I'll have to ask him.
If it is "in" the dryer somehow, how would we fix that? Where else could something be blocking it? What do we need to take apart?

You may need to take the back panel off. I had to take the back panel off of my dryer when the belt for the drum snapped. It's not difficult (only a couple of screws most likely), and while I was in there, I cleaned up the lint that was inside the dryer itself. The air has to go from the drum to the exhaust pipe, so whatever route it goes through inside the dryer may need to be cleaned.
Look up your model number on-line and look for vent cleaning info. You should be able to find either youtube videos, or diagrams showing how to take apart the dryer.

Yes to what the other poster said. FYI I had the same problem and had a house fire from it! So definitely don't run it at night or when you are not home. That said-our problem was that lint had built up under the covering around the motor you need to take the cover off and use your vaccuum brush attachment to clean all over the inside. That should help

Something similar happened to me too. Had to unscrew the panel to get access to contraption where the water drains out. It was clogged with lint!
Definitely check your model and see if you can get access to this area. My DH had to do this at least once a year to delint our dryer.

Re: Cleaning w/lint brush didn't work...
Well, I think the dryer is shot...
My DH worked on it for 5-6 hours yesterday. All he did was take the back off to vacuum the lint out from where ever it was and every time he went to put the cover on, it wouldn't start. Then when he had it off he tried to start it and only sometimes would it go on? All the wires are in the tightly and he was very careful about touching things. When he did get the dryer to work with the back off, one of the prongs kept getting burned marks on it? Here's the thing, the last repairman replaced that cord with a new one because it was really burned which we didn't know about. He also checked the voltage, etc. coming out of the dryer and everything was normal? So now we have no idea why it's only turning on every so often only without the back cover and now it's burning again? My DH is saying that it might be the outlet, and I said no because this isn't the first time this is happening and not in 2-3 different places. It HAS to be the dryer itself but apparantely no one knows how to fix it?

Re: UPDATE: Cleaning w/lint brush didn't work...
I'm wondering if you have a faulty outlet.
How about calling an electrician?

We've already spent a bit of money for someone to come fix the dryer, an electrician is fairly expensive. The problem with the dryer not drying the clothes was there before any electrical problems and in other houses (we moved 2 times since buying these). The burned prong is the second time this has happened with this dryer. The last plug was burned either where we are now or the house prior to that? We're not sure?
So basically this means that we now have an electrical problem and a drying problem??? I don't know what to do? Can the dryer itself be causing the burning problem?

Re: UPDATE: Cleaning w/lint brush didn't work...
The only reason I would invest in an electrician is because you fried the prong and if you get a new dryer it could happen again.

That's true, good point!
Do you think the dryer would cause it to burn or it wouldn't even be able to do that?

I would call the manufacturer and complain abpout what's happening. Maybe they will give you some sort of credit or voucher you can use to buy a new one
