NYC teachers and maternity leave
So I just went to the maternity workshop and found out really my only option. I am negative lots of days and really can't even borrow any. I was told about the 30 days grace period, where we get paid for weekends and holidays. Has anyone done this?

I just went to the workshop this past thursday! I wonder if we were at the same one. This is my first child so I don't have any experience with the 30 day grace period. Is getting short term disability an option? I vaguely remember her saying that if you exhausted all your options then you can apply for this. You should email the guru lady and ask her your question, she seemed so nice I am sure she can help! Good Luck.

I was at Thursdays workshop too! I think for short term disability, u have to go off payroll. That's prob a pain!
The workshops are given 2 times a month ( I think). U have to ask ur UFT rep for the info. She will give u the email of the woman in charge of setting it up. U attend the workshop according to your due date, always in your last trimester. It was very helpful

crasher here.. but if you do go out on disability, you can still collect a portion of your paycheck. As you payroll secretary about it.

Email Karla Jordan at the UFT. Send her your file number and EDD. She'll register you for a workshop in your boro.

I'm set up to go in Dec but just wondering if I'm due in February, do I get paid for winter break? and then Easter break? Is it going to thoroughly F up summer pay too? I'm pretty sure I have to go back after 12 weeks which is around May but wanted to know what you guys found out,

What I learned is that you can literally only get paid for 6 week maternatity leave. You get paid by using your sick days. All together you would need 30 sick days (if there are no vacation days involved- you get paid regardless for your vacation days if it falls over the 6 weeks). Even if you have 50 days in your CARS you won't get paid after 6 weeks.
With that being said, if you take off before your due date you can use your sick days to get paid then and for the 6 weeks if you have enough days.
The lady who runs the work shop is very informative and answers ALL questions.
The DOE gives us 6 weeks for a natural birth and 8 weeks for C-section.
Through FMLA you can take 12 weeks without losing your health insurance (again you will only get paid for the 6 weeks by using your sick days and/or borrowing up to 20 sick days). With FMLA if you take off before your baby arrives that counts towards your 12 weeks. So if you take off October 19th but the baby does come for another week- you already used up one week of the 12 weeks.
There is also child care leave that protects your job (but not position or school) that you can take up to 4 years.... but this is without pay or health insurance. And if you have a low ranking and are laid off, you are laid off.
If you only take 12 weeks you should get paid for the summer I believe. I am almost positive she said that you get paid for any days that are vacation because its not our fault that we can't come in.
It was a great meeting- a little long but it answered so many questions. And they give you a cute baby t-shirt.

This all sounds about right - great explanation! Except I think it is 5 years (not 4) unless it changed...but basically 5 yrs for when they start Kindergarten...I am on child care leave right now! AND it resets every time you have a new child...So even thought I have been out for 4 years, I am pregnant with my 3rd and the 5 years will reset when this one is born (Up to a max of 15 years)

If you are untenured, the longest you can be out is 12 weeks (FMLA leave). Your job is not protected at all after that.

I do not have any days to even borrow. So this morning my secretary told me to take FMLA and a 30 days grace period. The 30 days will pay for weekends and Christmas vacation. But I am only planning on being out for 6-8 weeks so why would I do FMLA? That just continues insurance after 12 weeks.she didn't even mention disability. Is it a pain to go off payroll? I need some type of money when I am off so this is so difficult!

I think if you take more then 6 weeks you have to take FMLA. The DOE only give us 6 weeks for a natural birth. If you have a c-section then you can take 8 weeks without using FMLA. I think FMLA is just the leave nothing to do with pay. I think you can collect unemployment with FMLA but not sure exactly how it works with the DOE....
