Another Godparent question...

When DD1 was born, the godparent decision was easy. DH is only one of two children, and has an older brother who he is very close with. We asked him to be the godfather, and we asked my older sister to be the godmother. So we had one from each side of the family and it was a done deal, easy decision!

Now we are pregnant with DC2 and it will be a harder decision. DH doesn't have any more siblings that we can chose, and he has one cousin but we aren't very close with him at all.

I am one of 5 children so I still have my brother and 2 more sisters. I was thinking of having my brother be the godfather and my younger sister (who is now 23 and is amazing, and a big part of my DD's life) be the godmother.

But I feel guilty that both godparents would be from my side of the family.

DH does have a niece who is 28, who we used to be close with, but she lives such a different life from us now --- going out with her friends and she isn't always responsible about things. I don't know if she would be the best choice for a godparent.

I'm at a loss! Maybe some of you can share some of your stories and it will help!

I think it's fine to have your brother and sister as the godparents. My father is an only child so my godparents were my aunt and uncle on my mom's side.

Re: Another Godparent question...

This is our first child but DH and I plan on asking his brother and our sis in law to be the godparents. I have an older brother but I'm not very close to him and it doesn't bother me that the god parents will be from "his side." I think you should pick your brother & sister since they sound like the better choice.

We are doing the same. DH has one sister so she was DS's godmother. I have 5 siblings so for DD my sister and one of my brothers are her godparents.

Re: Another Godparent question...

DS's godparents are DH's only brother and his cousin who I got close with in recent years.

This DC's godparents are going to my DH's sister and her husband.

I have a sister who I'm estranged with so she was never an option. I have a younger brother (19) but he take any real interest in DS so I don't think he is mature enough for it.

I think its a big honor and responsibility to be a godparent. They should be someone that DC can speak with as a friend but who looks out for them like a parent. They should take an interest in the child. Making the child a priority in their lives.

All of the godparents for our kids are from DH's "side" but I think its more a matter of who fits the criteria as opposed to where they fall on the family tree. IMHO.

Re: Another Godparent question...

My DH only has a brother and he is my DD godfather, and my sister is the godmother, for my son we use my BF and my brother, for this baby we are using my cousin who we are very close with and my other brother! I don't think it really matters if its more from one side of the family, my DH has a very small family so they understand.

Re: Another Godparent question...

I was actually just godmother yesterday to my sister-in-law's youngest daughter. My husband is one of 4 and his sister is the one with the three girls. My brother-in-law was godfather to her oldest with one of the fathers sisters. Same with the middle girl. My husband was godfather and the father's sister was godmother. Yesterday I was godmother and my husbands youngest brother was godfather. No one from the dad's side of the family because they are no longer speaking. So I have seen both godparents from the same side.

It's not your fault that you have a big family. If you want the people you pick, then go with them! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would use your BIL again and your younger sister.

Even though I have a sister and I close to her I picked my SIL again. So she is a godmother to both my girls.

The only problem with that...is that my BIL hasn't been a very involved godfather and that really bothers me. Chat Icon Even DH gets upset about it and usuallly he backs his brother up no matter what. He hasn't been to a birthday party of my DD's in 4 years (she's 6, and he stopped coming when we stopped having restaurant parties and started having more kid-friendly parties, but all other family members come) and maybe only sees her about 6-10 times a year. He will come here to use our yard for a yard sale, but never comes here to spend any time with us or DD. So yea, I wouldn't want to pick him again, unfortunately. I do want godparents who are super involved.

My brother is a Dad and a wonderful one at that, and we see him often. I am really leaning towards asking him to be the godfather. Especially since my Dad just passed away and my brother has taken on the role as being the patriarch of the family, I think it would mean a lot to him.

I guess DH and I have to discuss it a lot forther. I don't want to hurt his nieces feelings...but...I feel like my side of the family is more involved in my DD's life and would be in our future child's life also.

I dont see anything wrong with having both from your family. Why pick people that may not be the best choice just so it's even, KWIM? My godparents are both on my dads side and my mom has a brother and 2 sisters. You should pick whoever you feel is best for the "job".

Re: Another Godparent question...

With DS#1 we chose my husbands brother as godfather (who since then is so preoccupied with his own life that he isnt so involved Chat Icon ) and my best friend as godmother. With DS#2 we chose 2 of our great friends who are married (DH has been friends with the husband since kindergarten and his wife we have been great friends with for about 13 years) and now for DD we had my brother and sister (they werent really in our lives at the point when I had DS's) It was all mutual decisions and it worked out great. We basically chose based on who at that time we thought woould be the best suited to be such a special part of our DC life Chat Icon
