secondary insurance question
Does anyone have primary and secndary insurance using yours and DH's health plans? (pay for 2 plans from your employers) Mine covers IUI unlimited. DH's covers none. Thinking of moving on to IVF in Jan. Mine covers no IVF and DH's covers 50%. But if I change to his, none of my doctors (PCP, gyn, etc) participate in his plan. So Id lose all that.. Is this the purpose of having both plans? Are there any other benefits to having both? this insurance stuff is so confusing!

Re: secondary insurance question
At one point I had primary and secondary insurance. The way that it was explained to me is that the person with the earlier birthdate..meaning month becomes the primary insurance carrier. I think the way that it works is that when something has to be paid they go to the primary insurer first and then the secondary. Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong but I think it's good to have both...that way you can get the bets of both world's.

Re: secondary insurance question
Thats not how mine works- im the primary holder of my insurance and everything gets billed there first. my primary will either cover it or not. If not, they would send a denial to the provider, who then bills to the secondary, which is dh's ins.
For me, its been a godsend because although my primary ins is really good, I dont have out of network coverage. So my secondary covers everything else.

Re: secondary insurance question
are you definitely doing ivf? If you have both insurances come that time, your doctor will bill it to your primary (yours), they will deny it, then it will be sent to your secondary, who will then cover it. Depending on how much your monthly premium is compared to the ivf cost, it will likely be worthwhile.

Re: secondary insurance question
I had 2 insurances for awhile but finally dropped mine and just use my husbands. You have to look at the infertility benefits on both plans and see what works best for you. They will always bill yours as primary and then you have to wait for the explanation of benefits and then resubmit to the secondary insurance and they will either pay or not pay depending on your coinsurance. It was very confusing and very annoying. I dropped mine once I maxed out my infertlity benefits because it wasn't worth it anymore. If your doctors office has someone in charge of billing maybe you can call them and ask them what works better for you, to keep both or drop one. They would probably know best.
