Newborn photographer
So I was ready to book a recommended photographer on here, and discovered that a friend used her as well. Her daughter is only 4 months old and she couldn't remember if it was 250 or 300. Well this photographer is now quoting me $450!! Don't you guys think this is a huge increase?? I really wanted to use her but now really can't rationalize the price at all. Wwyd? Should I contact the photographer about it? Not sure how to word it. I know it's a lot of work and just don't want to devalue it in any way.

Maybe you can price out some of the other newborn photographers recommended on this site? I have heard great things about quite a few of them.

I have and they're around the same or higher.  I just don't get how the price went up that much in such a short amount of time.

I have and they're around the same or higher. I just don't get how the price went up that much in such a short amount of time.
Your friend probably booked quite some time ago, even though the session itself was just last month. My prices jumped from up $150-$200 (depending on the package) about a year ago in one shot. But anyone who booked their session prior to the price change was still given the older price.
My original prices were from when I did photography part time while working a regular FT job, but when I switched to FT, if I looked at how much I was making per hour (not just shooting time, but also editing, correspondence, travel, etc.), it was less than NYS minimum wage. Also, as equipment and software gets upgraded, prices get increased. I had 'portfolio building' prices long after I already had an established portfolio, hence the giant jump in price.
I would not say anything to the photographer. I guarantee you will get an answer similar to the above. Hope this helped

ITA. Also, chances are the photographer wasn't charging enough back then. Maybe they did an assessment and realized this. If you like their work and the others are more $$, then book her.

i was feeling this way too...the prices we were quoted were more than we were looking to spend. but the photog we decided on included a link to this article about choosing the right newborn photog w her prices, and it made a little more sense to me; the article explains the reasons why these photographers charge so much. not only are they talented, but it's not as inexpensive a business to run as it had seemed to me. reading this made me feel a little better, hopefully it will help you (the OP) to feel a little better too. maybe the photog you're looking into was working with lower prices from when she first started out, and now w her portfolio she realized she needed to raise her prices in order to make more of a living.
anyway, it's def expensive but if you found someone whose work you really love, then book it! you'll pay a lot but i bet you'll be happy you did when you have beautiful memories to look back on. that's how i justify it.  here's that article:
