Talk to me about keratin treatment
When I was at the salon yesterday I was speaking with a stylist and discussed keratin treatment. I made an appointment to have it done in December. She told me there is no chemicals yet she puts this stuff in my hair from root to tip and we let it sit for a bit. Then it gets rinsed out then she dries and straightens my hair. What kind of keratin is this? I know there are versions that use chemicals, but she said this wasn't one. If you got a similar treatment, how long did yours last?

Re: Talk to me about keratin treatment
Anything that relaxes your hair is going to contain chemicals, no matter what. It's not like you can put straight keratin on your hair and have it "take." However I do believe there are some keratin treatments that contain fewer chemicals and less formaldehyde derivatives than the ones that were first available.
When I had it done, it was the kind you could wash the same day but I waited until the next day to wash it. It lasted about 10 weeks before I noticed frizz again. I had it done a 2nd time and it lasted much longer because I think it builds up on your hair over time. Took quite a few months for it to wear off.

I never heard of anything you wash out and then straighten, but maybe its the new one by Bumble and Bumble, its hard to find a salon that is certified by Bumble and Bumble though and I can't get any details on the application. The product is called Concen-Straight and I'm dying to try it, because they claim there is no acid nor formaldehyde.
I'm a keratin treatment addict partly because my hair doesn't hold it very long and I have to keep getting them, and party because my sister is a stylist and I'm her guinea pig for crazy a$$ curly hair.
Of the more popular treatments, there are 2 basic types of keratin treatments. formaldehyde based, and acid based.
Acids generally safe in small doses, but can burn in large enough ones. These are the formaldehyde free ones (and in general some people talk about them as "chemical free") Acids can permanently damage your scalp. The ones that wash out right away, are the worst. They are known to cause hair loss.
The longest a keratin treatment stayed in my hair was 2 months. I don't know if its because I sweat a lot (salt breaks it down) when I work out, or if its because I like to wash my hair every day (too much friction), or what ... but it just doesn't stick and for sure it doesn't build up for me. I lost a treatment spending a day at the beach soaking in the ocean (salt water)
Right now I'm going on 2 months of a treatment called Rejuvenol, it washes after 24 hours, but making my hair fall out still 2 months after treatment. I'll never do it again for fear I'll loose all my hair. But I was warned, its a known side effect. (my exact words where, I have too much volume anyway )
Before that I was addicted to Coppola. Very gentle, smells like crap, stays in your hair 3 days, burns your eyes a little, lasts for me, about 4 weeks. Its aldehyde based but also acid based. My hair always looked and felt really healthy on it.
I have more curl than frizz, my hair was always really healthy and thick. People have scorned me for touching it, but I can't stand it the curl

Thanks for all the details. I've been going to my salon for years and have never had any issues so I just basically trusted what she had to say. I don't plan to do this until end of December so it definitely sounds like I need to ask a lot more questions. This is the formaldehyde so I felt okay about it. I will ask if it's the bumble and bumble treatment and let you know!

Re: Talk to me about keratin treatment
There is one that is all natural. One of my co-workers got it and I can try and find out the name but the onyl salons that did it are in NYC & NJ. And it didnt lst very long at all,
I have had 3 dfferent types done. The 4 day wash out, the next day wash out and the wash out right away and by far the best one was the wash out right away.
I asked my hairdresser about the all natural one and she said she never heard of it but usually if there are NO chemicals then usually they do not last very long.

I was told I wouldn't be able to wash my hair for 3 days. I believe I misunderstood what she said about washing it out right after she put it in, but I swear that's what she said. I do remember she said after it was all done I could put my hair behind my ears or up in a ponytail, etc.

The wash right out version I used definitely had chemicals in it. And yup you put it in dry hair use straightening iron then it gets washed out and you can do whatever you want to your hair...ponytail, behind your ears...whatever. It lasted the longest for me but definitely had chemicals....could smell it during the process.

Re: Talk to me about keratin treatment
Ive had the 24 hr keratin treatment done, and the standard full on formaldehyde treatment, where you cant wash your hair for 3 days. Best results were the formaldehyde one. My hair stays frizz free and sstraight for 2-3 mos, and I normally wash it every day. There are pics in my album of one of the treatments, before and after. The last time I did keratin, I did it myself, and it came out just as great as the salon. My friend ordered it for me and I did it at home. It's just time consuming, but the results are amazing. You will love it!

Re: Talk to me about keratin treatment
I just had this done on Friday and I am so happy with the results!
I went to Michael Joseph salon in Seaford, and the product he uses is great. It does contain some formaldehyde (the ones that don't contain any DON'T work), but its less than the old brazilian treatments do.
A few years ago, I had the brazilian done at the IB salon in Flushing that everyone used to go to. When I did that, my eyes would burn every time I blow dried or flat ironed my hair for a month because of how much formaldehyde was in it.
With the treatment I just did, I didn't even smell any chemicals at all during the treatment and only VERY slightly when he was flat ironing me. When I blow dried my hair after washing it for the first time on Sunday night I smelled no chemicals at all.
My results came out great, and I'm getting a lot of compliments on my hair.

Re: Talk to me about keratin treatment
I had the Brazilian keratin done but it just made my curls less tight but it was still definitely curly, I wasn't expecting my hair to be straight because it is so difficult to straighten but I though it would be a loose curl. I got neither so I haven't bothered to repeat it
