Cruise Newbie Question
When you dock at a port- are you allowed to get on and off the ship multiple times or is there only one set getting on and getting off time?

Re: Cruise Newbie Question
Note that if you are at a tendered port - you may need to get a tender ticket and be slotted in a group to get on/off.
At tendered ports we make sure we want to do everything in our one trip since going back and forth can be a hassle.

Re: Cruise Newbie Question
What is a tendered port and how do I know if the 4 stops we are making will be one of those?

A tendered port is one where the ship doesn't dock and you have to take a "tender" (often a life boat) to shore. They are much more rare than they are common. You would know if you have one because it will usually says the port name with tender next to it on your itinerary. Most ports you dock but if you have a larger ship and a smaller island you will sometimes tender. For example Princess tenders into their private island.

Well the process I think changes depending on the ship (larger ones are more strict) and the cruise line. I found they did things differently on Princess than Celebrity. Generally you get a ticket in your stateroom - they allow those with shore excurions off 1st so they don't miss their tour. But then it varies - often suites and repeat cruises get access to get off 1st. You don't have to get off at the number you are given you can always go later - but they generally won't let you off until your number/color has been called. Although once they go through all of the colors/numbers then it isn't a problem for you to get off again. The pain about tendering is that it is a huge hassle - you have to wait for the tender, then take the ride, etc. So it is time consuming - unless you have a full day it usually isn't worth it to get on and off as the above poster mentioned. Also the tenders are small so if you get motion sickness you might not want to ride more than absolutely necessary.
As to your original question. You can get off and on as you please - but keep in mind you will have to go through security each time which can be a pain and time consuming. When we cruise we often get off first thing when we dock and do a shore excursion. Then we get back on and have lunch and then get off and sometimes wander around if there are local shops. You are just responsible for ensuring you are back in time for the ship to sail or you risk them leaving without you.

Re: Cruise Newbie Question
Good advice from everyone elese who wrote here.
I typically pack a huge tote with everything we could need for the day when we get off the boat. We always had the late dinner so we would head back to the boat like 6-7 for an 8pm dinner to change and shower etc.
If we were docked overnight we would sometimes go off the boat after dinner and get a drink and walk around if the area was safe.

Which ports? Maybe someone here has been to the same ports and can let you know if it's tendered or docked.
