Amnio Vs CVS

Can someone please explain the difference between the two. I'm considering one of the two tests but need more info in order to make a decision.

Also, can the sex be determined from any one of these exams at 11 or 12 weeks?

CVS is done earlier at 12 weeks. They use a needle through the abdomen or go in vaginally to take a sample of the placenta. The sample is then tested chromosomally. I recently had it done after an abnormal NT scan. And since it is a chromosomal test, yes, you can find out 100% what the gender of the baby is.

Amnio is done later, at 17 weeks. Again, a needle is used to extract a sample of the amniotic fluid.

I was told by my perinatal OB that the CVS basically tests for the same thing an amnio would test for, so I don't think I am going to do amnio. although, I know people who havre done both, so I am not really sure on that one.

I had the amnio and not the CVS. Most don;t do both unless there is a need.

The previous poster explained the test.

I decided on the amnio because it actually carries a slightly smaller risk of miscarriage and many Drs don't do the CVS test as often and if I was going to go it I wanted someone who does them all the time.

My sister though had the CVS test because she knew she had a big decision to make if the test came back bad.
