Massage.. the other type
anyone? I read online its recommended to start perienneial massage by like 36 weeks.. any BTDTs?

 no no.. i read that you massage your nether regions so it will easier to stretch..

no way.. when you actually look up what you have to do to massage the particular area (and exactly where that area is), it just did not seem like something i would want to do. And frankly, wasn't sure i could reach it anyway with the giant belly in the way!

I literally just read about this yesterday & while I don't want to tear just as much as the next person, I don't know if I could do it!!!!
Maybe if it was a sure thing but it could be for nothing!

It's much easier if you can get your husband to do it. I asked my husband a number of times during my last pregnancy, but he couldn't handle the thought of it, and I can't say I blame him! I planned to try to do it myself but just never got around to it. I ended up with an episiotomy AND tearing. I will DEFINITELY be doing it this time around. I have a few friends who did it, or had their husbands do it, and they dealt with little or no tearing.

my doctor claims he does it during labor...whatever, I am trying not to worry about it because there is no way I am doing it.

I'm just scared because it doesn't sound like it feels pleasant considering you have to press down enough with your thumbs that you feel it stretching  at least that is what it says in the pregnancy book I have.
I think it's worth a try though, I just can't imagine doing that to myself. I think I am scared enough that I might do it

Most doctors do it during delivery. With my last delivery, the doctor did it a little during the internal exams (at the hospital, when I was already in labor), because I wasn't progressing very quickly. Then he did a lot of it while I was pushing. Still ended up with tearing and an episiotomy. It's definitely better to do it regularly ahead of time to give the muscle time to stretch and soften before delivery.

I think if you only do it during delivery it's not going to help much but if you do it daily for a few weeks before the birth you are going to be able to stretch that area further than you were when you first started, so logic says it has to help. I personally think a lot of OB's do an episiotomy because it's faster than letting the area slowly stretch on it's own. I know that some people will need to be cut and others will tear no matter what but I think some doctors use it as a shortcut, not all but some, like it's part of their routine.

Your Significant other is supposed to do this for you.
My friend had this done by her dh and she swears by it. It is supposed to help with the elasticity and blood flow to that area so you have less chance of tearing or needing an episiotomy.
