We are in the process of adding a egress while our basement is being finished. We needed it in our plans to get a permit from Town of Oyster Bay. We are also planning to use it only as a playroom. You can skip it if you are not getting permits but we felt it's better for peace of mind. But it adds $$$$ to the cost.

Re: Does your finished basement have an egress or door?

We're going to finish our basement this winter and we are adding egress windows. We don't have an outside entrance, but we don't want one. We are above grade, so adding egress windows won't be much of a project.

i think they're required now....? we got a quote to replace our basement windows and in order to get legitimate approval (from town) we need the egress.

My basement doesn't have Egress windows.. but GOD I wish I did!!

My gf has both egress windows and an outside entrance and both look nice but if I were going with one over the other it would be the windows.. it just lets SO much light in and absolutely changes the space.

I have two egress doors. One in the original half of the basement, and one in the new half. Since we had the basement dug and poured, the cost was negligible, but the benefits are huge. It an unfinished basement, but I can bring stuff in directly to the basement without having to go through the house.

We have to put in an egress to finish it. Our town will not issue a permit otherwise. So we are having a door and steps out put in.

Honestly, we are only using it for a playarea, however I would never want to chance there being a fire and my children being stuck down there with no way out.

For safety reasons we would have put in a door (or window) either way.
