Oktoberfest menu!!!!! please check this out for me!
so, so we are doing Oktoberfest in 3 weeks.
the plan is simple..
a few mini kegs, a few varieties of bottled beer, a few bottles of german wines and a Kiddie Keg with freshly pressed apfel cider for the kiddies.
foodwise:
wurst: bock, knock, brat, cervelat
grilled pork loins
mashed potatoes
potato salad
sauerkraut
red cabbage
bread
pretzels
dessert: apfel strudel
German chocolate cake (hubbies bday cake)
I want to keep it to what one would find at Oktoberfest or in one of the many bavarian beef gardens offer.
but I'll be honest, I look at this list and see sodium, sodium, gas, gas gas, sodium, bloat.
what do you think? I guess I can serve a light breakfast with veggies and fruits beforehand
or maybe I can include a gemichster salat which I had in switzerland, but the german part, so maybe it will count.
TIA

Bavarians have beef gardens? Are they decorated with beef curtains??
I love every single thing about your menu. Seriously. I (personally) also think that you should include a tray of sliced sauerbraten.. but that's only because I think every party needs sauerbraten. With spaetzle and noodle kugel.
But what you have is more than enough and sounds delightful. You may want to add some green things. Like roasted sprouts or grilled cabbage or green beans.

my only issue is that sprouts is just more cabbage!! (see: gas gas gas) blah.
I think I'll make that salad, it usually has lettuce, corn, tomatoes, roasted beets, cucumbers cheese and a mix of 3 different salad dressings.
but thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds good and very traditional. You can add a cucumber salad to be a little healthy, and as Jeannie suggested, some roasted brussel sprouts.
Don't forget the homemade whipped cream (Schlag) for the strudel.

I love this menu and I like how it's traditional.
Can I ask where you get or how you do the kiddie kegs with cider? Sounds so cute!

I made it up
I am just using my jug with spigot and will fill it with cider and put a sign on it that says Kiddie Keg.

Can I suggest this dip (you could serve it with slice Brats or with pretzles ... sooo good! My friend throws an Oktoberfest party every year and this is always a hit with guests
'oktoberfest' dip
1 container whipped cheddar cheese (in the dairy aisle near the cheeses) 4 oz Cream Cheese 1 garlic Clove grated on a microplane 1/2 Bottle Dark Beer (approx) Salt & Pepper to taste
Beat whipped cheddar cheese, cream cheese and garlic clove. Add beer in slowly and mix until desired consitency. Serve in hallowed out pumpernickle bread or with pumpernickle pretzels

I fell in love with Rosti in Zurich earlier this year, and you could do that with sweet potatoes for a healthier choice! Yum!!

Re: Oktoberfest menu!!!!! please check this out for me!
Sounds good!
Some more suggestions:
Maybe a Knoedel (dumpling) dish?
You said something about breakfast. I'm not sure what's you can buy etc, but maybe Weisswurst
Leberkaese
Really good mustard!
Gingerbread heart cookies with sayings on them to wear around your necks? I have no idea how they taste, but they are popular around Oktoberfest time and Xmas.
Like these:
Another drink idea for the kids: Apfelschorle. Apple juice with sparkling water. Cider works as well.
Of course you have a lot on your plate as well, just thought I'd suggest more if you are still looking for ideas.

Re: Oktoberfest menu!!!!! please check this out for me!
I don't know how similar/different Polish food is from German (looks pretty similar to me) but DH is Polish and LOVES Cucumber Salad. It has sour cream and onions. I'll see if I can get a recipe for you. He also uses a Beet relish, again I'll see if I can get the specifics on that for you.
Only thing *I* would love to see is Pierogies, but I don't know if it's actually German I like the potato & onions ones but DH has gotten sour krout ones that seem pretty authentic. I think they're just stinky

Yes! Sounds similar to what I'm planning.
I'm also making regular ol' hotdogs for the younger crowd and anyone else that can't for one second eat something different once in their lives. Oh, sorry, lost myself there.
BTW, which German deli did you end up going with?

Re: Oktoberfest menu!!!!! please check this out for me!
we are ordering online. I want so much to get out to the one that Susibee posted about but I know it's not going to happen.
I could make sauerbraten....that would be good.
and
Bean-o apperitif and Gas-X for dessert.
ETA: : I was thinking about Knudel and those cookies look delicious.
I really have to plan out my time b/c somehow, we are throwing 2 big parties within a week of each other.....
can't say I don't love a challenge.

Re: Oktoberfest menu!!!!! please check this out for me!
It reminds me of my childhood! If you want something green, gruenkohl is a good side dish, but not "light"
My family owned a German deli, so there was also always a lot of cold cuts around at family functions.
also what about schnitzel (wiener/veal - which is technically Austrian; or chicken)?
stuffed cabbage could be another option too.
