Does this qualify for a home insurance claim?
I have some water leaking into my attic from the frame around the windows. One of the window was not framed properly by the previous owner, hence the water leakage. The frame needs to be replaced since the excessive rain we had lately has nearly rotted the wood.
We also have to replace part of our roof because of the excessive rain.
The quote we got to repair these 2 problems is 4K. Would we be able to submit these as legit claims and get some help from the home insurance co. with the repair cost?
Is it even worth it if our home ins. cost goes up?
TIA!

Re: Does this qualify for a home insurance claim?
What is your deductible?
Personally, that claim is pretty small. In my experience, if you put it through, you are running a huge risk of being dropped next cycle. If you think you are getting a good deal on insurance now, I don't know if I would rock the boat, because finding a new insurance company has gotten to be quite tough on LI.

Re: Does this qualify for a home insurance claim?
I agree with the PP - that would be considered a nuisance claim and it's not unusual for companies to drop you for that sort of claim, especially if it's something that they consider due to negligence. A co-worker of mine was dropped after making a $6000 claim for a collapsed cesspool and emergency replacement in mid winter. I think the insurance company considered that negligence since they felt the old, outdated cesspool should have been replaced by the homeowner before it collapsed as part of routine maintenance. They may look at your leaks and damage the same way even if it was the previous owner that was neglectful. It's kind of like making a claim on your auto insurance for a scratched bumper or a broken mirror - in comparison to the total value it's a small amount.

I agree with the PP's
Think long and hard before you make a claim because the insurance companies are so fast to drop you and then you will be scrambling to find someone else to cover you.

We have something similar going on here, ours will cost around $7500. Not even going to try it. We called about 8 insurance spots just tonget insurance. Im not filing a claim unless it is major.

Re: Does this qualify for a home insurance claim?
Thanks ladies, my deductible is 1k, but I can probably swing the 3-4k to pay for the repair.
Since that's the case, maybe I should raise my deductible to 5k if it reduces my rate even more...
I'm paying about $660 a year for home insurance...
