Ever NOT pay your utility bill out of spite? - Updated
Removed because I wrote to my legislator and National Grid said doing so was hurting my situation.
Will let it lie until my gas gets turned back on....then I'm going to fill you in more.
Thanks.

Re: Ever NOT pay your utility bill out of spite?
Posted by bdmom Well, Nat'l Grid engineer met with our contractor today and said he won't schedule the work until we pay $1100 up front (cash or bank check) to re-connect. I'm LIVID.
CASH up front?? This sounds shady. Did you call National Grid to confirm this? And to make sure this guy isn't trying to scam you? I can't imagine a company like them requesting cash!

right? That's their policy when it comes to requests like ours, and you have to bring the cash or mail the bank check to one of their service centers. When we did the abandonment of service, we drove the cash to Hicksville that day and the crew came within two hours to disconnect everything, so I know as soon as I pay again, they'll reconnect and my family can move back in. I'm just mad that I have to pay $1100 when a 'new' customer wouldn't be charged.

I would definitely continue fighting and not pay that $1100. You paid the fee to abandon service, therefore you are not a customer. You should be treated as a new customer when hooking back up again!! What if you sold your house and the new owners wanted to hook up? It would be free... and it's really the same exact thing!! I wouldn't pay, that is ridiculous.

Def shady. I would tell him ou were told no charge for new customer and have him call them and get to the bottom of it. Who asks for cash, or cashiers bank check for that. Something isnt right.

Re: Ever NOT pay your utility bill out of spite? - Updated in OP
Update - I sent them an e-mail indicating how wrong I feel this is and outlining that I already paid to abandon the service, etc., and they called me back to say the charge was dropping from $1175 to a little less than $700. This makes me question them EVEN more. Considering Gov Cuomo today launched an investigation into our state's public utilities for Irene, I feel it's perfect timing to write to my assemblyman and state senator on this topic. Really makes me angry!
