Gas vs oil
Is it worth it now to convert to gas? Our 50+ year oil tank is leaking so we're told we need a new one which will cost $2500. Our boiler is about 5 years old.
Does anyone know the prices for gas now and how it compares to oil? Our oil contract is up in October.

Re: Gas vs oil
We in the coldest month our gas bill was around 200 dollars. We had gas when we moved in, so I dont know conversion prices, but overall gas is SO much cheaper, and may be worth the investment.

Re: Gas vs oil
we are in the process of converting, still getting quotes, and it takes on average 6-8 weeks just to get gas to your property if you dont already have it. It costs between 6500-8500 to convert with the national grid incentive. Gas is about $2/gal and oil is around $4/gal so its def a savings.
Is your oil tank above or below grade? You will have to legally abandon it with your town and if its below grade and leaking you may need to remediate the soil contamination.

we know the gas line is right outside our house. we've already called keyspan to bring it to the house because we're definitely using it for cooking.
the tank is above ground in the basement. im guessing the oil will need to be emptied and the tank will have to be broken down to pieces to get it out of there.

Re: Gas vs oil
It was absolutely worth it. We had an old oil burner that had to be replaced also. It was the perfect opportunity.
It was going to cost us $7K to replace that unit.
It cost us $5K TOTAL to convert to gas.
Runs so much cleaning. And our heating bill for the past 2 winter has been half of the oil cost.

Re: Gas vs oil
Def switch! We have oil and spend a lot more money than our friends and family that have gas. I hate oil and feel we get ripped off bc there are no gas lines by our house!
