gestational diabetes

I was just told that i failed my 3 hour glucose test so I have to see a specialist. IF you have GD and you are able to control it with diet can you give me an idea of what you are able to eat and not eat?

THANKS!

Re: gestational diabetes

i dont have it ,but i failed only one of the hours in the 3 hour test, so i have to monitor it like i have it, and its all diet, they give you a montior to test your self 4 times a day... i eat eggs for breakfast and then you have to have a snack, which i usually have half a banana or a fiber one bar, and then for lunch i have a salad with grilled chicken and all different stuff in it and then your suppose to have another snack, and then dinner i usually have a salad or grilled chicken with a side... its all about counting your carb intake, you still need carbs but you can't over do it.. they will go over a whole meal plan with you!! so far my numbers are always good!! and look at it this way you wont gain so much extra! ha!

Re: gestational diabetes

I have 3 meals and 3 snacks a day with carbs spread out like this (1 carb = 15g):

breakfast - 1 carb
morning snack - 1 carb
lunch 3 carbs
afternoon snack - 2 carbs
dinner - 4 carbs
bedtime snack - 1 carb

I'm not supposed to have fruit or milk until lunch - though I find I can have an apple at morning snack.

try to eat whole grains, and make sure you eat protein (which includes cheese) with every carb.

Re: gestational diabetes

I'm a carb-o-holic so I had to greatly reduce that. I was having a bagel with cream cheese or butter for breakfast every day when working. I went down to a slice of raisin bread with a tbls of peanut butter and a string cheese.

I'm allowed
For breakfast:
1 starch, 1 meat/substitute, 1 fat

For snack:
1 starch, 1 fruit 1 meat/substitute, 1 fat

For lunch:
2 starch, 1 milk, 1 nonstarchy vegetable, 2 meat/substitute, 2 fat

For snack:
1 starch, 1 fruit, 1 meat/substitute, 1 fat

For dinner:
2 starch, 1 fruit, 2 nonstarchy vegetables, 3 meat/substitute, 2 fat

For snack:
1 starch, 1 meat/substitute, 1 fat

I'm an electrician so I am VERY active all day long. I thought I was going to die of starvation when she first told me my 'plan'. I drove home in tears. I went to work the next morning 100% skeptical but you know what... it was FINE.

I play with my menu. Some days I'll have the same thing over and over. Others I change it up. Last night I had regular pasta with chicken and a creamy pesto sauce for dinner, and my numbers were fine. I've had Taco Bell and my numbers were fine once, not fine the 2nd time. Just need to play with my menu and get it right.

Feel free to FM if you need or want to chat.
