For those who have a portable generator
Do you need a "special" set up??? DH is tell me we need a special plug installed by an electrician. WTH??? I thought you just put gas in and plug your fridge in.

Re: For those who have a portable generator
If you're connecting the generator to your main breaker box then you need a special switch installed. If you just plan to run certain appliances then you can plug them directly into to the generator. Remember that the generator must be placed in a well-ventilated area since it will release carbon monoxide as the motor runs.

Re: For those who have a portable generator
i run a cord out the window or door to the generator outside. I only have a tiny one that i would only run periodically for the refrigerator. I could care less if I have lights but would like to charge my cell phone periodically.
Cooking we plan on BBQ or using our firepit/fireplace.
My father on the other hand has it connected right into his box but he is one that can do the entire house and neighbors refrigerators.

I have car chargers for our phones, so I'm just going to plug into the car once in a while to top off the phones.
I also have an inverter, so I can run wall outlet appliances off the car for short periods.
