Question about hospital stay

I know you get 2 nights for a vaginal birth and 4 for a c-section.

But is it 2 nights from the time you check in to the hospital, or from when the baby is born? Like, if I go into the hospital with contractions at 8 PM Friday, and the baby is born on Saturday morning, I get discharged on Monday, right? Not Sunday?

Re: Question about hospital stay

I was trying to figure out the same thing when I got my hospital stay approval letter from insurance company. I never got around to calling them so I'd be interested if anyone has input about this.

Re: Question about hospital stay

it's from when the baby is born. If you are in labor overnight, it doesn't count as a night

Pretty much, yeah! I kinda felt gypped!! Especially because by the time I left L&D and got into a room it was almost 2am! If he had been born an hour later, I would have gotten a whole extra day! Luckily they didn't kick us out. They discharged us in the morning and I was like "I'm nowhere near ready to leave yet, is that ok?" And the nurse told me to take my time- I definitely did! It was like 3pm before we were finally out of there lol!

Re: Question about hospital stay

I'm delivering in Huntington & it was explained to us as:

the day the baby is born (regardless of it being morning or night) is considered day Zero.

Next day is day 1.

Discharged the day after, which is considered day 2.

Re: Question about hospital stay

I delivered my daughter at 8:23 pm on a Tuesday and was released Thursday morning. So for me it was 2 nights, 1 day.
