French drain
Friend or foe?
A house I will be buying has one & I'd like to hear what others' experiences with them were.

Re: French drain
Can you give a little more info? where is the drain? Is it used to direct water away from the house? at the end of a driveway or patio? How long is it? If it's for the house, does it have gravel on top or a metal grate? Does the house have gutters AND a french drain? I worry about the grade not being pitched properly if it's for the house. The grade should pitch away from the house. there might be water issues that's why they installed the drain. You will also have to maintain it, especially during the fall when leaves pile up on top.
