Re: Oil to Gas Conversion?
Is their gas in your neighborhood? If you're on long island, call national grid. They will do "research" on the nearest gas line in your area, and if it's already on your street, I believe they don't charge you. On the other hand, if a gas line isn't nearby ( our nearest is around the block) they called me back and said it would cost $63,000 to convert.

Re: Oil to Gas Conversion?
I think it is free to bring the gas to your house IF it is in the neighborhood up until a certain point, then it's like $40 per extra foot, or something like that.
Definitely have to calls NG and figure out where the closest line is.
I would be interested in any further information anyone else has as my new house has an old oil system and I'd like to convert. I think it means you would need a new stove and washer/dryer?

You don't *need* new appliances. If you have oil heat, you would most likely have electric appliances. There's nothing wrong with keeping them. I have gas heat, and electric stove and dryer. We also have a gas stove.

Re: Oil to Gas Conversion?
We used Burner King and they took care of everything (permits, etc..) to a turn key system.
We had called National Grid to find if we could have gas. They will tell you yes or no and if they can open the street. We had to wait 1 year to do the conversion. Our Township had put a hold on any work requiring opening the road for 5 years. We were 4 years into the last time the road was opened. So it was not too long to wait. National Grid told us about it.
We have gas heat but all our appliances are electric. We were not ready to change our stove just yet. It can be done later on but do it at the same time so you don't have to tear walls/floors later one to do the gas line for your stove/appliances.
