When your on vacation.....
how much do you normally tip the housekeepers? Especially if there is a tip envelope there

One or two dollars a day, depending on the length of the stay and if it's near any nice round numbers. For one night, I'd leave $2. For three nights, I'd leave a $5.
Recently though, I've heard though that it's nice to leave money every day, instead of a lump sum at the end, because you won't always have the same person clean your room every day. So if you check out on a Saturday, you might be giving all the money to the part-timer who only works there one day a week.

$2 per day. I leave it at the end of the trip. My feeling is that although multiple people clean my room, it would feel like they are stealing from me if they just took money I had left out. I might not have intended to leave the money out. I would rather the house keeper have the money at the end and they can divvy it up among themselves.

When I stay at regular hotels (Holiday Inns, Ramadas, etc) I leave $2-$3 per day. When I stay at a nice resort I leave $5 per day.
I usually put the total amount in an envelope, give it to the front desk when I check out and ask them to make sure the staff who worked on our room gets it. Hopefully they are being honest and passing it along to the housekeeping supervisor and it's getting split up fairly.

This. We usually just leave it at the end. I know some may scoff and say then someone is getting all the tips for the work done throughout the week whether it was them or not, but DH is such a weirdo that he never wants to let the housekeeper come in. We just nick clean towels from the carts. I'm usually the housekeeper on vacation.  If they come in two or three times in a week that's a lot.

$20 per week...
Given we're mostly at all inclusives... DH makes sure to give it to the person cleaning our room as soon as he see's them (in the first day or so)... and we've never had a want for anything for the rest of the stay...

although i can't say i NEVER tip; we're not tipping $20. When we left our hotel in Costa Rica last May; i think we may have left like $10 for the maid; but can't remember exactly how much DH took care of it. We spent 3 nights in Fort Lauderdale last Fall; and maybe left $5.

We also don't tip. Hotels don't leave envelopes like they used to, and we always feel uncomfortable just leaving the room with cash there. I never considered giving my own envelope to the front desk and asking them to make sure the maids receive it. We might do that from now on. Unless there is a specific place to leave the cash, we do not tip. We are big tippers to the people we do come into actual contact with, like the bellhops and others, since we can hand it directly to them, but now that I think about it... it kind of makes me feel bad for our hotel maids now...
