Diamond question
Last night for sh!ts my BF and I stopped by a jeweler by us to look at rings. This place carries mostly designer settings. Out of curiousity my BF asks what a 1.25 carat diamond with good color (like F, G, or H) and very good cut, VVS1 - VS1 clarity would cost. She tells us around $10,000.
Now, this was NOT in the diamond district. I'm surious to know if most of you agree with this price or if you think it would be less if he visited the DD? I think it was a little bit of sticker shock for him and he was hoping to spend more like $7-8K on the diamond. What are your thoughts?

I think JUST the diamond would cost that much or more if you want near colorless and VVS quality. Id say 10-15k! and that is if we are talking about a standard round stone. Not sure what type of stone he showed you.
If you go closer to 1 ct weight (just under or just above) and downgrade to VS (instead of VVS) I think you could get something from 6500-8000.
The setting will obviously be additional, and with the cost of gold $$$

I would say that sounds about right. I think a round stone might even be a little bit more.

That sounds about right. Check bluenile.com. I remember their prices were pretty acurate when DH was diamond shopping. Bf might want to ask around. DH knew someone who dealt with diamonds directly and he was able to purchase the diamond and then have it set elsewhere.

That's where I was looking.  I just searched for round stones and the starting price for those specs were around 12k
Anything other than round, will likely be lower.

Thanks everyone - I did a check on Bluenile too and came up with around $10,000. I'll tell him to go to the diamond district to see what he can find there. I do have a friend who works in the diamond district, so maybe he can work with her to get a better deal.

I would disagree ... and say avoid buying in the diamond district. Blue Nile online has much better quality for the price. We used it for all our wedding jewelery except my eng setting (it is designer)
I have a friend/distant family member who works there, look at the diamond DH bought on blue nile. He said he could probably not sell it for that price, it would be marked up considerably and he might only drop close to it if someone haggled with him. More over if you are passionate about getting a conflict free diamond, diamond district is not for you.

I agree. I'm not a huge fan of the diamond district except to window shop. My grandfather was a jeweler who did all hand work in platinum. The diamonds themselves were handled by someone else but he knew the industry. My grandmother would always say that there is no such thing as a special deal on a diamond. Everyone wants to get paid on the deal. I think that with the stone you are describing, for 10K, the color would be around H. I have heard great things about Blue Nile.

i know someone who bought a 1.28 ct round brilliant stone GIA certified, G color, VS1 for 10.500 in the diamond district. He haggled them down from $12,000. He paid cash and didn't pay tax on it.

that sounds about right because he is essentially asking for the best quality diamond. If he wants to spend less he might consider a G color and VS2. Best way to know is to shop around.

The rule of thumb is that for every flawless carat you pay 10k. Figure in a slight discount because flawless diamonds are rare + .25 cts + a setting and sounds right on

Okay, well tell that to my grandmother who got a ring almost exactly as described above, with two side stones at .3 carats each, for half the price the OP was quoted
