Eating habits.
I REALLY want to start eating healthy for this pregnancy but I find that my diet really isnt all that great. Any advice on how I can start eating better? What foods do you recommended? Its especially harder now that DH works a late shift so I dont really even have to cook dinner anymore.....help

Veggies, veggies, veggies! Grilled, roasted, soups! Chicken and turkey. I had so many fab recipes when I belonged to weight watchers, but forgot to save them all when I cancelled
There was this one soup that I used to make, it was delish! It had cabage, escarole, fennel, zucchini, onion, and diced tomatoes. So freakin yummy! I want it now plus, you can make one big batch on Sunday and havee it as a starter all week. Maybe add some cannelini beans and make a meal out of it.
I have hungry girls 300 Under 300, lots of good recipes!

Re: Eating habits.
what about your diet isn't that great? Do you eat too much fat, salt, sugar? Do you eat too much or not often enough, etc? Eat out too much or too late at night?
I think one thing that helps keep things interesting is to try a new veggie or fruit every time you go to the market. Try Jicama, spagetti squash, dandelion greens, etc. Even if you end up not liking it, it isn't boring KWIM?
I like to make a bunch of brown rice in a rice cooker and you can freeze them in individual portions. Brown rice takes a long time to cook so this makes a side of healthy grains really fast on weekdays.
Prep your fruit and veggies so you are more likely to reach for them. For example, wash all your apples, pears etc and cut up carrots and celery stick and keep them in your fridge. If they aren't prepped, usually i am too lazy to eat them!
I am always trying to eat healthy but in a low calorie, low fat way (before the baby). Now I'm focusing one trying to get my "colors" in. They say try to eat every color of the rainbow to get variety in your diet. It helps and it's an easy way of getting healthy stuff in your body!
Greek salad with fruit and some nuts sprinkled in it is a quick fast breakfast.

Re: Eating habits.
Slow and small change works best for me. If it is a sudden and harsh change, it becomes too overwhelming and I quit. Same thing goes for working out. If i say Im going to workout everyday! this week- I usually start slacking by Wed.
Try not to think of it as dieting or cutting out things but incooperating MORE fruits and veggies. I try to eat 2-3 servings of fruit a day, there by having less room for garbage treats. Balance is key, protein, fruits, veggies, proteins, dairy, carbs etc Not just eating all carbs for a meal. (ie bowl of pasta with a side of italian bread)
After awhile, it becomes a way of life, not a diet. You feel better and have more energy. Also making healthy choices now for yourself will roll over to your kiddies making better choices too.

Re: Eating habits.
Wow, thanks ladies. Very helpful information!
My problem is that I dont eat very much and when I do I usually go grab junk food. Chips, cookies..you get the point. When I eat "dinner" sometimes its just a can of chef boyardee or a bagel or something. I know, VERY bad! I really want to change, especially now that Im pregnant. I want to be healthy for this baby but its especially hard now that I dont "need" to cook dinner since DH isnt home for the night anyway. Any ideas on quick dinner meals for one?

Feta is not a no no. Same as other cheese as long as it is pasteurized.

I would kinda take the first trimester as it comes. I was very sick and my Dr said eat whatever your stomach could handle.....so I ate pizza. Yes I put on more than the recommended weight for my first trimester cause I was basically only eating carbs but since I have started feeling better I added the fruits and veggies back in and at my appt today I am actually the same and dr said thats great.
I would let your body tell you what to eat.....I also didnt cook the entire first trimester.

I agree with Jane, Feta cheese is fine, you just can't have unpasteurized Feta.
I know with me, I seriously need to lay off the carbs. I love me some bagels, and pasta, and bread, and you get the idea. More veggies, a few servings of fruit a day, more dairy.

This was me too. Except I also ate cheeseburgers and lots of bagels.
I also started drinking more juices than I ever did, just to get some sort of fruit and veggies in b/c just the thought of veggies made me sick. And, I also drank lots and lots of water. I always have though - I swear it makes me feel better.

Just stay away from the taboo foods.....raw fish, unpast cheeses, etc and you will be fine and if you are lucky and don't have the morning sickness then just try to eat like a normal person...a cookie a day will not hurt the baby.....I just wouldn't eat a box of cookies each day....may not hurt the baby but will make you gain quickly.
And ask your doctor about what they think you can and can't eat.....my dr is all about anything in moderation (including cold cuts which is a no no to other drs)
you will be fine!!!!!!

Good point. If you get morning sickness, EAT WHATEVER YOU CAN!
I lived on pizza as well. Watermelon wa a craving of mine and helped my stomach so there was some fruit, but carbs and pizza were my staples 1st trimester.
I think I gained around 15-18 lbs first trimester, and that was with my throwing up at least once EVERY DAY!!!

yup, thanks ladies! I read the info more carefully and feta was included in the list of soft cheeses that are more likely to be made from raw milk. But again, it's fine if it's been pasteurized! Yay, more cheese the better for me

Re: Eating habits.
Yup lots and lots of veggies. Avoid empty carbs.
A great dinner for one is grilled chicken on a 50/50 mix of baby spinach and mixed salad greens. Buy the bagged lettuce and grill up chicken cutlets for the week. I'm not a bit nut fan but my dr is... you can throw some in there for added protein and vitamins.
I just discovered Fiber one cereals- omg, they are packed with vitamins and fiber! Add some light soy milk and you are good.
Lunch is usually turkey on a low carb or whole wheat pita or the salad above. A tiny dab of light mayo and yum...so good!
Once a week you can throw tuna on of those 100 calorie deli flats for either lunch or dinner with some pickles on the side and a small side salad.
But I usually trade my once per week tuna allowance for sushi. It's probably one of the healthier dinners I have since dinner usually is the hardest meal for me to eat healthfully.
ETA: I know that not all doctors are ok with raw fish and lunch meats so check with yours first. Mine is fine with all of that (and he's very conservative).
