Taking pictures of strangers homes
OK so I've decided that next year, I'm ripping out all of my landscaping and starting from scratch. The whole thing is kind of overwhelming me, as I have ideas but really dont have a clue where to start.
I've walked around my neighborhood and seen landscaping designs that I love. DH says we should take pictures of them. I feel weird just taking pictures of someones house....just as I dont think I'd want someone taking a picture of mine.
Thoughts? Is this ok to do?

Re: Taking pictures of strangers homes
my mom didn't take pictures, but she rang people's doorbells if she liked the siding/ landscaping or roof. she would ask about those things.

Re: Taking pictures of strangers homes
I think it's fine to take pictures if you are taking them from the public street and only capturing what is visible to the public (and not trespassing onto anyone's property to get certain shots, see what's behind fences, etc.). Nobody can stop you from standing on a public street and taking out your camera...
Also, Google Earth and similar services do it all the time!
It's not as if you intend to publish the photos or use them for financial gain or something. You are just going to use them for your own private purpose -- to get inspiration for your own home. So I don't see anything questionable about doing that.

I pretend like I'm taking a picture of my kids, making sure to get whatever it is I like in the background.

Re: Taking pictures of strangers homes
Two women took pictures of my garden a few weekends ago. I was flattered.
I've stopped to talk to neighbors a bunch of times and complimented them on their yard. Only once or twice did I hear "I don't know, our landscaper did it." I think most people would respond well, especially if you complimented them first.
If I was going to take pics though, without the conversation, I'd probably walk by the house quietly, first thing in the morning.

I've had moms come over for playdates and takes pictures of our playroom for inspiration. I think it's fine and a compliment!

I've had the same dilema. I think it's best to let them know before hand that you like there ______ and would like to tkae pictures to incorporate ideas into your landscaping.
